LOT 128

LOT 129

LOT 128 1804 C-8 R1 Spiked Chin VF25. Sharpness VF35 but there is microscopic granularity and fine verdigris near the rims on the obverse, strongest behind the portrait. The reverse is nice. Frosty light olive and steel brown mixed with reddish brown tones on the obverse. A dull nick at the dentils behind the head is the only notable mark. MDS. Ex Rick Gross, 2013 EAC Sale, McCawley & Grellman Auctions 5/4/2013:40 (lot ticket included) LOT 129 1804 C-10 R1 EF40. Five points sharper with a few faint hairlines in the field before the portrait. Otherwise smooth and choice with attractive frosty medium brown and light chocolate toning. Flowline luster covers the protected areas. LDS, Manley state 3.0.

LOT 130 1804 C-12 R2 Crosslet 4, Stemless Wreath EF40. At least 5 points sharper with a few hairline scratches hidden in the flowlines in the field before the portrait. Otherwise just a couple tiny scratches well hidden under TATE. Frosty medium brown with lighter golden tan in protected areas.

 TRIPLE STRUCK OFF CENTER

LOT 131 1804 C-13 R1 Plain 4 without Stems PCGS graded AU55. Glossy steel brown blending to olive brown and chocolate in protected areas with subtle overtones of light bluish steel. The surfaces are smooth and the only defect is a small area of very fine carbon at the bottom of the F in OF. The obverse was struck three times, all with different rotations. One of the strikes (probably the first) was centered on the planchet, another was about 25% off center toward K-7, and the third (not necessarily in that order) was slightly off center. The lips and nose of the 25% off center strike show on Ms Liberty’s neck, and the E from LIBERTY is visible in her hair above the ribbon knot and the Y is just left of the bottom of her eye. Evidence of the other off center strike shows on her neck. The reverse has no doubling and was struck only once by the reverse die. The additional impression(s) on this side were struck against a blank planchet positioned about 30% off center creating an off center reverse brockage on that planchet. The reverse displays some of the usual swelling that occurs when it creates a brockage on a new planchet. This piece is plated on page 481 in Breen’s half cent encyclopedia illustrating what he terms “First two impressions variously off center and rotated.” Our grade is EF40. A great multiple error, and it comes with a nice provenance. E35176.55/30451244
