INDIANAPOLIS EAC 2024 FINEST 1848 N-1 EARLY STATE

LOT 483 1848 N-1 R1 Repunched 184 AU55. A mint state cent that was lightly cleaned long ago and is retoning frosty light bluish steel brown with lots of the mellowing artificial red remaining in protected areas. No spots or stains, but there are very faint hairlines on the obverse. A shallow planchet chip midway along the jaw line and a thin vertical nick on the right edge of the curl at star 13 are the only notable marks. Sharply struck EDS, die state a, with sharp repunching visible on the 184. Not in the overall condition census for the variety but finest known of the early die state.

 EARLY STATE N-6, EX NAFTZGER

LOT 484 1848 N-6 R1 PCGS graded MS63 Brown. Frosty medium steel brown with hints of underlying very faded mint color, mostly on the reverse. There is a hint of friction on the highest points and a few light contact marks, including a nick on the lower edge of the bust above the tip of the curl. Nicely struck EDS, die state a, before any die cracks on the re verse. Our grade is AU50, second finest of the early state in the Grellman census. Comes with a nice provenance.
