EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 424 1825 N-1 R4 VF20. Sharpness VF35 but the obverse was skillfully burnished to remove some marks in the field before the portrait. Nicely retoned glossy chocolate with darker steel brown on the highpoints. Softly struck at stars 3-5 and in the opposing area at TED-S, but the right sides are sharply impressed. M-LDS, Grellman state d, with a rim cud break that drops down into the field at stars 7.5 to above star 9, and that cud is strong on this example. Removed from an NCS slab graded EF details burnished (NCS label included, and it shows the attribution and Reiver provenance). Ex George Ramont-Jules Reiver, Heritage Auctions 1/24/2006:19838-Daniel W. Holmes, Jr., McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldbergs 5/30/2010:192 (includes the Holmes collection envelope and both lot tickets) CONDITION CENSUS 1825 N-5 RARITY

LOT 425 1825 N-5 R6+ VG10. Sharpness VF20 but cleaned and poorly retoned using a sulfur product, now dull dark gray, nearly black. The surfaces are smooth under the grainy appearance imparted by the artificial toning. The only marks are a few minor nicks including one between the 1 and the bust tip, a few more over star 1, and a dull one close off the end of the nose. The fine die cracks on the obverse from the earlier N-4 marriage are visible and the sharp spike between the leaves left of the O in ONE is clear. Probably worthy of a higher grade if properly retoned. Certainly among the finest of only 18 known.

Ex eBay unattributed

LOT 426 1825 N-10 R3 G5+. Glossy light olive and steel brown with light reddish brown toning in protected areas on the obverse. The surfaces are smooth and the only marks are a minor rim bruise over star 5 and a fine planchet lamination at AME (as struck). LDS, Grellman state d, with a cud break that connects star 7 to the rim above.

LOT 427 1826 N-1 R2 VF30. Sharpness AU50 but hairlined with traces of verdigris and crud in protected areas on both sides. Otherwise just a touch of wear on the devices and trivial marks. Frosty chocolate with traces of faded red in some protected areas. Sharply struck E-MDS, Grellman state b, with a cud break over star 6.
