LOT 393 1808 S-277 R2 F12. Sharpness at least VF20 but dark with traces of fine roughness, mostly on the reverse where there are specks of verdigris. There are dull contact marks on the edge at ERICA. Rather glossy dark olive brown and steel. MDS, Breen state IV. Stars 1 & 2 are weak due to die failure on the reverse but they are still visible. The date is bold.

LOT 392 1807/6 S-273 R1 Overdate Large 7 over 6 VF25. Glossy olive brown and steel. Smooth and satiny with only trivial contact marks. A tick in the field off the end of the nose and a couple hairlines under OF are the best identifying marks. Very late die state, Breen stars IV late, with strong die clashmarks and swelling on the obverse and a rim cud at STA extending to the left halfway to the D.

LOT 394 1808 S-278 R3 VF25. Frosty reddish brown and light chocolate with steel brown toning on the highpoints. Slightly sharper but there are some light scratches in the field before the portrait and a small planchet flake at the base of the first 8. MDS, Breen state III. Flowline luster shows in some of the protected areas.

LOT 395 1808 S-278 R3 NGC graded VF25. Glossy medium steel brown and light chocolate. Smooth with minor contact marks including a tiny nick on the 1 in the date. The strike is uneven, weak on the left and strong on the right. May have been caused by dies out of proper axial alignment (die faces not parallel) or a tapered planchet. Regardless of the cause stars 1-5 are weak or non-existent as is most of UNITED STATES. EDS, Breen state I, with no trace of die flowlines and sharp dentils (where they were properly struck). Our grade is F12. The attribution and Mervis Collection provenance are noted on the NGC label. 2038623-028
