EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

 LUSTROUS S-250

LOT 360 1803 S-246 R3 VF25. Sharpness EF40 but recolored with a light steel wash over frosty chocolate brown surfaces. Smooth and attractive in spite of the color, and the only mark is a shallow depression in the field close to the back of the head. Sharply struck EDS, Breen state I, before the “Mumps” break at the throat.

LOT 361 1803 S-246 R3 “Mumps Obverse” G5. Perhaps a point sharper but there is minor roughness on both sides and a rim bruise left of the hair ribbon. No verdigris and the eye appeal is decent for the grade. Glossy dark olive and steel. Rare TDS, Breen state IV, with a clearly defined cud break at STA. The “Mumps” break at the throat is fully formed. About a dozen are known to us with the cud break.

LOT 363 1803 S-250 R3 AU50+. Very attractive lustrous steel brown with faded red in the protected areas on the obverse. Just a hint of rub on the highest points of the devices from mint state. The only marks, and they are trivial, are a tiny diagonal scratch in the field at the chin and an even lighter horizontal hairline on the top of the neck. There is some dirt in protected areas around the wreath. MDS. A great cent, very close to AU55.

LOT 364 1803 S-252 R2 VG10. Sharpness F15+ but there are a half dozen thin scratches on the obverse, mostly on the neck and into the hair left of the face. Otherwise smooth with attractive glossy light olive brown and chocolate toning. LDS, Breen state VII, with a bold cud break connecting the 18 and lowest curl to the rim below. Noyes graded F15 sharpness net VG7, his photo #26099. A rare die state that comes with a nice provenance.

LOT 362 1803 S-248 R4 Mumps Obverse VF25. Sharpness EF40 but covered with uniform fine granularity. No marks or verdigris. Slightly glossy dark steel and olive brown with lighter chocolate on the highpoints. M-LDS, Breen state II late, with a clear die crack through MERIC. The Doubled Fraction Bar and “Mumps” break at the throat are clear.
