EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 343 1802 S-236 R1 VF30. Close to EF40 but there are a couple minor contact marks in the field off the hair ribbon. Lightly worn with excellent eye appeal. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate. MDS, Breen state VI early, with die cracks and clashmarks but no cud. The dies were out of proper axial alignment (die faces not perfectly parallel) causing minor weakness on the left sides while the right sides are strongly impressed.

LOT 341 1802 S-236 R1 F12+. Sharpness VF25 but recolored an uneven mix of olive brown, chocolate, and light brown. The surfaces are smooth and glossy but the uneven toning is a distraction. Just a few marks including a tiny but obvious pin prick in the field close to the chin and a short scratch in the hair left of the ear. E-MDS, Breen state III, with light die cracks on the reverse.

LOT 342 1802 S-236 R1 VF20. Ten points sharper but lightly burnished and recolored glossy dark olive brown with frosty light brown and golden tan in protected areas. Tiny peeps of “red” show in protected areas on the reverse. The surfaces are smooth. Small rim bruises at LI and the opposing area at NIT are the notable marks. MDS, Breen state V, with die cracks and clashmarks but no cud break.

LOT 344 1802 S-236 R1 G6. A few points sharper but covered with fine to moderate roughness, strongest on the obverse. No verdigris and the only mark is a dull scratch in the leaves below the C in CENT. Slightly glossy dark olive brown and steel. The date and legends are complete and clear. LDS, Breen state VIII, with a cud break at STA connecting the S & T to the rim. The cud break is clear.

 UNIQUE TERMINAL S-236

LOT 345 1802 S-236 R1 VF20. Slightly sharper but the reverse is coated with a thin layer of some protectant leaving those fields very glossy. Possibly lightly cleaned and retoned but the color is decent. What makes this cent special is the die state. The die cracks on the upper half of the reverse are strong and the area between cracks under ES is raised (a retained cud). Die failure at TATE has resulted in the elimination of the earlier cud at STA, and the opposing area left of the lower curls is very weakly struck as a result. Can’t recall another instance of a disappearing cud. Noyes graded VF25 net F12 and unique in this die state, his photo #35068. A piece for the die state specialist.
