EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

 BREEN PLATE COIN

LOT 333 1801 NC-4 R6+ G4+. Sharpness at least VG7 but there are several obvious scratches in the field before the portrait, all old and blended into the natural toning. Otherwise there are no notable marks and the toning is a rather glossy dark olive brown and steel with lighter chocolate on the devices. Very fine granularity covers the fields and protected areas but there is no verdigris. The date and legends are strong. Graded VG7 net G5 and tied for CC#3 honors in the Bland census. Noyes says VG7 net G4 and tied for CC#5, his photo #28345. This is the Breen plate coin for the variety (the smaller photos on page 637 of his encyclopedia). All the 13 known examples are net graded due to marks or environmental damage so waiting for a choice one might be an exercise in frustration.

LOT 335 1802 S-227 R2 VF20. Sharpness near VF30 but there are a couple dull rim nicks or small bruises at the top of the obverse, a few ticks on the neck, and some hairline scratches in the field before the portrait. Only the two rim nicks at the top of the obverse are visible to the unaided eye. Otherwise smooth with trivial marks and nice eye appeal. Glossy medium steel brown with splashes of light chocolate. LDS, Breen state III, with die strong die clashmarks on the obverse and crumbling on the diagonal of the N in CENT.

LOT 334 1802 S-225 R3 VG10. A couple points sharper with traces of microscopic roughness in the fields, mostly before the portrait. No verdigris and the only notable marks are a diagonal nick in the drapery and a chip out of the rim right of the F (as struck). M-LDS, Breen state V. The cud break under the date extends slightly right of the date.

Ex Thomas D. Reynolds-Lucien Birkler Collection

LOT 336 1802 S-230 R1 F15. Rather glossy brown and steel, possibly retoned. Considerably sharper with smooth surfaces but there are numerous fine scratches on the upper part of the obverse, a couple scratches across the 802, and a strong scrape on ICA. Rare EDS, Breen state I, with no cracks.
