Torres Half Cent Collection
LOT 53
1805 C-1 R2- Repunched 5, Stemless Wreath, MS65 Brown PCGS. Frosty light brown blending to chocolate with tan in protected areas, particularly on the obverse. There are a half dozen small puffs of darker olive brown toning on the reverse, the largest one under the second T in STATES. The only contact mark is a tiny tick in the field off the upper edge of the hair ribbon. Otherwise this piece is choice. Sharply struck E-MDS, Manley state 1.0, with a small rim cud off the end of the right end of the wreath ribbon. The repunching at the top of the 5 is sharp. This is the plate coin for the variety in the 1998 Manley reference (the large photos on page 163). Our grade is MS62. Certainly one of the finest known of the variety. Only two examples of the variety have been graded MS65BN by PCGS, this piece and the one in the famous Missouri Cabinet Collection that this cataloger also graded MS62 (lot 78 in the McCawley & Grellman/Goldbergs 1/26/2014 auction that realized $69,000). A beautiful half cent that comes with a very nice provenance. 35179.65/45724169 $29,500 Ex Numismatic Gallery (Abe Kosoff & Abner Kreisberg) 5/1945:356-1971 ANA Sale (Stack’s) 8/1971:1-William K.
