1795 C-4 R3 Punctuated Date, Plain Edge, VF25 PCGS. Choice glossy light to medium chocolate brown with slightly lighter brown toning in protected areas on the obverse. Smooth and quite attractive with only trivial marks. The best identifying marks are a couple small ticks on the nose, a nick on the top of the cap, and a dull nick over the second A in AMERICA. The date is bold and the “punctuation” between the 1 and 7 is strong. The legends are fully formed except for weakness on CENT (which is nearly always weakly struck on this variety). E-MDS, Manley state 2.0 early, Fuhrman state 2. The die line down from the first T in STATES is incomplete. A beautiful half cent that offers great eye appeal. LOT 18 1795 C-5a R3 No Pole, Thin Planchet, MS61 Brown PCGS. Frosty brown and light chocolate with splashes of olive brown on the obverse. The darker areas on the obverse have specks of fine verdigris, mostly on the upper half of the cap. The only contact mark worthy of mention is a fine, light scratch from the left edge of the Y through the forelock into the forehead where it fades away. The surfaces are smooth except for microscopic planchet chips on the left side of the obverse and the opposing area at ED-STAT (as always seen on this variety; probably because the die faces were out of proper alignment). Otherwise the date and devices are sharply struck. EDS, Manley state 1.0, Fuhrman state 1. The die cracks on the reverse are fine and there is no swelling at the F in HALF. This piece is the first of three Uncirculated examples listed in the 1983 Hanson-Breen condition reported on page 149 in Walter Breen’s Encyclopedia of United States Half Cents 1793-1857. Our grade is net AU55.
