1798 S-178 R5+ Small 8, Style II Hair, Reverse of 1796 AG3+ Sharpness near VF20 but corroded and pitted, strongest on the obverse. No verdigris or contact marks, and the toning is a decent and slightly glossy chocolate and dark olive brown. The date is strong and the legends are complete and easily readable. LDS, Breen state IV, with all the die cracks described in his encyclopedia. A die state he calls “Extremely Rare.” The Single Terminal Leaves at the top of the wreath (Reverse of 1796) are strong. $2,500

LOT 241 1798 S-179 R2 Small 8, Style II Hair VF20+ Attractive glossy medium chocolate with lighter brown toning on the highpoints. Smooth with only minor contact marks including a tiny hairline scratch nestled under the lowest curl. MDS, Breen state III. The E over Inverted E in AMERICA is visible in spite of some dirt in that area. A nice mid-grade cent. $1,250
