LOT 231 1798 S-171 R4 Small 8, Style II Hair F15 Sharpness VF20 or a bit better but there is an arcing scratch from the shoulder into the hair under the ribbon plus some smaller nicks scattered over the obverse. A minor planchet lamination at the bottom of the 1 also catches your eye. Glossy medium steel brown and light chocolate with traces of frosty tan in protected areas on the reverse. M-LDS, Breen state IV, with a shallow retained cud break left of the L in LIBERTY. The repunching at CA in AMERICA is gone. Graded net VF20 by Bland. Comes with a very nice provenance. $1,500

1798 S-172 R2 Small 8, Style II Hair VG10+ Sharpness VF20 but covered with very fine roughness. No notable marks but there are traces of shallow crusty verdigris in protected areas. Slightly glossy steel and olive brown. Nicely struck E-MDS, Breen state II, with tiny rust pits hidden in the hair below the ear but no cracks or cuds. The repunched M feature is clear. $400
