THE WADLINGTON-HOLMES S-170
LOT 228
1798 S-170 Small 8, Style II Hair VF30 Slightly sharper but lightly cleaned and nicely retoned glossy chocolate and light olive brown. The toning looks natural and original now. The surfaces are smooth and the only notable mark is a very tiny pit or planchet flake on the cheek left of the nostril. E-MDS, Breen state II. There are fine die clashmarks on both sides but the arcing die crack in the left obverse field has not formed. The reverse is rotated 20 degrees CCW relative to the normal head-to-foot die orientation. Called EF40 net VF30 and tied for CC#9 in the Noyes census, photo #29975. Bland says EF40 and tied for CC#3. A nice example, arguably in the condition census. $3,500 Ex Hollinbeck 2/1947:2293-Kay Rogers 1984-James R. McGuigan 1984-Normal W. Pullen 1984-Lillian S.
