Torres Half Cent Collection
LOT 46 1804 C-8 R1 Spiked Chin, MS65 Brown PCGS. Lustrous medium brown and light chocolate with golden tan and light brown dominating the reverse. The surfaces are satiny and this piece has great eye appeal. The best identifying marks are a tiny tick on the cheek close to the curl, a faint streak of slightly darker toning from ATE into the wreath below, and a tiny rim nick over the right side of the second S in STATES. M-LDS, Manley state 4.0, Fuhrman state 4, with a partially raised retained cud break over LI. The cud is almost fully raised over the L, less so over the I. A neat intermediate die state. The “Spiked Chin” feature is bold. This is the plate coin for the die state in both the Manley and Fuhrman references. Our grade is MS62. A superior example of a “Spiked Chin” variety; certainly one of the finest known. 35167.65/30451236 $13,500 Ex Stack’s 10/1984:437-James R.
