Torres Half Cent Collection

LOT 26 1797 C-1 R2 1 Above 1, XF45 PCGS. Frosty steel brown and chocolate with lighter brown in protected areas on the reverse and darker steel brown on the highpoints. No roughness or notable contact marks, just light wear on the devices. small puff of slightly darker toning under the jaw is a good identifying feature for this piece. The left edge on both sides is weakly struck and covered with tiny planchet chips, a characteristic of examples in the early die state. The die faces were not perfectly parallel, a problem that was corrected for later die states. EDS, Manley state 1.0, Fuhrman state 1, before any swelling or noticeable die cracks on the obverse. The reverse is rotated 15 degrees CCW relative to the normal head-to-foot die orientation. The misplaced 1 above the normal 1 in the date is obvious. LOT 27 1797 C-1 R2 1 Above 1, AU55 PCGS. Frosty light olive and medium steel brown blending to chocolate. The surfaces are smooth and the only contact marks are some very fine hairline scratches on the cheek and nose with a few extending slightly into the field before the face. The scratches are faint, visible only under magnification, and this half cent has excellent eye appeal. A spot of dark toning in the field under the bottom of the cap is a good identifying mark. M-LDS, Manley state 4.0, Fuhrman state 6, with multiple bulges and die cracks on the obverse, and ICA in AMERICA starting to weaken due to the advancing die failure on the obverse. This is the plate coin for die state 6 in the Fuhrman reference.
