In the past, the youth depicted on this coin was often attributed to Caius Caesar, son of Agrippa and Julia the Elder, but R. Prideaux argues that it can only be that of Augustus as the oak wreath was his personal signature. It had also been standardly dated to 17 BC and assigned to the Ludi Saeculares, but although they were religious in nature, they were not funereal, as the symbolism on this coin indicates. The major event after 17 BC that can be tied to this coin, notes Prideaux is the sudden death in 12 BC of Augustus’ chosen heir, Agrippa in Pannonia. This was a very hard loss for Rome and especially for its legions. Prideaux proposes that this issue was struck in Pannonia to pay the now leaderless Pannonian legions expediently – without having to wait for a delivery from the distant Lugdunum mint. A local celator unfamiliar with Augustus’ portrait produced the dies, which would explain the very youthful head. And thematically, the coin reminds the soldiers of Augustus’ corona civica, while honoring their beloved general.
