Apollo was worshipped both as the patron of the colonists at Tarentum, and as the patron of the Pythagorean religious order there, which saw a resurgence of influence in the Fourth Century BC largely thanks to Archytas. The reverse motif of Herakles fighting the Nemean lion was used on contemporary silver Diobols of the Tarentum and its colony Herakleia; although on the silver issues it is presented in the ‘tondo’ scene where a crouched Herakles wrestles the lion by placing it in a stranglehold.
