Terry Denman Collection of Middle Dates Part 1

EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

 CONDITION CENSUS N-12

LOT 37 1817 N-12 R3 AU50 . Frosty light brown with darker steel brown and chocolate on the right half of both sides. Hints of frosty tan faded down from mint color show in the protected areas on both sides. Lightly worn on the devices with no notable spots or contact marks. A shallow low spot caused by debris on the die is well-hidden in the field between the 1 and the bust tip, and the strike on the upper half of the hair buns is a bit weak, as usual on this variety. M-LDS, die state f, with the obverse die cracks strong. A small internal cud break extends the left side of star 1 and the area outlined by die cracks at stars 1-3 is starting to sink as a retained cud. Ranked as high as CC#5 in the overall condition census for the variety but second finest known of the rare later die state (the finest of the die state is the slightly superior Newcomb:506-Starr:92 example). Called AU50 net EF40 in the Noyes census, his photo #20808. Bland says AU50 and CC#5 overall. An important cent that comes with a very nice provenance. Ex J. R. “Bob” Grellman, Jr. (purchased unattributed at the 1978 ANA Convention in Houston; then traded at the 1980 EAC Convention)-C. Douglas Smith Herman Halpern, Stack’s 3/16/1988:340 (where it realized $8250)-R. LOT 38 1817 N-13 R1 PCGS graded MS64 Red and Brown . Lustrous bluish steel brown with 5% of the mint red remaining on the obverse, 30% on the reverse. A choice mint state cent except for a few small splashes of darker olive and steel toning, the notable ones in the field under the chin and over star 12. These tiny splashes of darker toning contain microscopic traces of very light verdigris or carbon. Nicely struck E-MDS, die state b. The dentils are complete around both sides and a strong die line joins the bases of the I & C in AMERICA. Dull, wide lapping lines show at the bottom of the reverse. A sharp, attractive example of this Randall Hoard variety. Called MS61 and CC#5 in the Noyes census, his photo #37238. Our grade is MS60+. 36587.64/15114863
