Terry Denman Collection of Middle Dates Part 1

EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 26 1817 N-7 R3+ VF25 . Sharpness near EF45 with a beautiful obverse, but the reverse is covered with very fine roughness in the fields and protected areas. There is a dull, rather strong scratch over the E in ONE and smoothing to reduce roughness is evident under that E. The toning is an attractive light olive brown and chocolate and the eye appeal of this cent is better than the technical description might imply. Terminal die state, die state d, with a bold “Mouse” break on top of the head, very fine die cracks from the portrait, and rim cud breaks at stars 12 & 13. Noyes photo #36217. Comes with an impressive provenance. Ex Howard R. Newcomb, J. C. Morgenthau & Co. 5/16/1945:502-Floyd T. Starr, Stack’s 12/4/1984:1564-Dr. Thomas S. Chalkley-C. LOT 27 1817 N-8 R2 AU58 . Lustrous medium brown with frosty lighter golden brown and tan faded down from mint color in protected areas. Satiny and sharp with great eye appeal, just a light touch of friction on the highpoints. The best identifying marks, and they are barely visible, are a tiny rim nick over the E in UNITED and another right of the second S in STATES. Nicely struck E-MDS, die state a. All the stars have full radial lines and the fields are just starting to show flowlines. The shallow low spot that forms under star 5 is just starting to show and there is no trace of the “Mouse” break on top of the head. Struck with the reverse slightly misaligned to K-1. Called AU55 net AU50 in the Noyes census, his photo #28020.
