 THE NEWCOMB-STARR N-2

LOT 15 1817 N-2 R3 AU55 . Choice frosty light olive and steel brown. Satiny mint frost covers the fields and protected areas and this cent has outstanding eye appeal. Looks mint state but there is a trace of rub on the highest points of the devices. The only marks are a half dozen small spots of olive brown toning on the obverse including one hidden in the curl above star 13 and another at the bust tip. MDS with a radial die crack from the rim down through the center of the first S in STATES to the wreath, but this crack fades away before it reaches the O in ONE. A very nice example of this scarce die variety. Called AU55 and tied for CC#4 among the confirmed examples in the Bland census. Noyes says AU55 net AU50 and tied for CC#6, his photo #56696. A beautiful cent that comes with a famous provenance.
