An Introduction to

THE TERRY DENMAN COLLECTION OF MIDDLE DATES by Tom Webster

It’s my pleasure to pen this introduction for Terry’s Middle Date Large Cent Collection. This collection will be sold in two parts, the first in August 2025, at the ANA in Oklahoma City, OK, and, the second date is yet to be announced.

Terry was born in 1960 in Traverse City, Michigan and still resides there today. He is a small business owner in the automotive industry. His pursuit of collecting coins began at about eight years of age, sorting through penny rolls. By age eleven he moved up to bags of pennies and silver coins that his dad would bring him from the local bank. At age thirteen, Terry told his dad, who was also in the automotive industry, that he needed $75 dollars to buy a coin that he had found at a local coin shop. In describing the coin to his

Walt, Terry and Tom

dad, his dad exclaimed, “Are you nuts?” Terry had found a 1909-S VDB. The younger Denman, struck a deal with his dad to gain the capital needed to make that purchase. His dad said, “if you strip the wire from these cars, I’ll give you the money to buy the coin.” Terry recounts that the wire cutters were so large that he couldn’t hold them correctly to cut the wire but somehow, he still finished the job. During the time it took to complete the job, two things happened. That particular coin was sold and copper prices had dropped. His dad still paid him the $75 dollars and kept the wire, which Terry figures was worth $150 after copper prices rebounded. Even though the original coin he wanted was sold, he bought another one, my guess in the quality Denman is now known for. It was likely a valuable coin. The young coin collector, was on his way… Long ago, Terry told me that he has collected complete sets of ALL the series of Federal US coins with the exception of the ultra-rarities. He has had rarities in these sets he assembled, such as Pittman’s 1802 Half-dime, the 1876 CC 20 cent piece, the 1842 small date proof quarter, and others… His discerning eye was already developed before he began assembling his large cent collections.

I’ve known Terry since 2009, when I met him at the Dan Holmes Auction in Beverly Hills, CA. It was there that I began to truly understand what these Early Coppers were about, and what a significant collector Terry is. Knowing he was from Traverse City and I was From Kalamazoo, I introduced myself at the coffee pot table during the scheduled break. At the time, the expression on his face confirmed he was somewhat “In the zone”… as you would be if we had bought what he did, up to that point in the sale; so, I offered to buy beers at the end of the auction, he accepted, and thus began our friendship. Since then we have traveled to many coin shows, auctions, and conventions across the country and I’ve had rare insight to many of his acquisitions, deals, and even a couple of misses that go along with collecting at this level. To grasp the entirety of his collection sheds light on the fact that this is no ordinary collector, or collection. At this time, it is undisputed that he has assembled one of the finest cabinets of Large Cents, ever. His collection includes the Second finest Early Date Set, second to Naftzger; the finest Middle Date Set, and currently the second finest Late Date Set of US Large Cents. The quality for which is his focus is not an accident; this is a carefully curated collection by a coin collector that has methodically worked his way to best, and rival, the greats of this series of coins in all of time. Terry doesn’t seek the spotlight in his collecting or his collections, if you know him, you know he’s modest in his holdings and flies under the radar. You may see him at a show likely perched at the CVM table, and sometimes you’ll hear a great belly laugh from Chris McCawley as a result of Terry’s dry humor. There is also that beat up samsonite brief bag thing. “It works” he says, “so why would I need a new one?” Or the Holmes auction catalog that I can remember is so worn and taped up, but it holds within those critical pieces of information that he has carefully annotated. I know the steadfastness for which he adds coins to his collection. Slow and steady wins the race… as one of the most important things I’ve learned from him is, if you set out to be serious in the pursuit of collecting a series of coins, one needs to have patience. Patience affords and rewards one with opportunity. And focus. His focus shows well in this collection. His mantra is don’t stray too far from what you are really trying to accomplish. And, don’t forget color and surfaces, these are a must. He’s been fortunate to have had the opportunity to pick up pieces from holdings in long-time held collections, when those collectors bought the good stuff that became available long ago. Coins from the collections of Naftzger, Husak, Holmes, Frankenfield, Gerrie, Eliasberg, Ralls, Robinson, Ellsworth, Reynolds, Bird, Ahumada, and others. In this Middle Date collection alone, there are well over 120 Naftzger coins! Terry in a deal with Chis at his table

The early copper collector is generally part of a tight knit community. When we travel to shows, conventions or auctions, we are re-united with our friends. Friends such as McCawley, Pretsch, Klosterboer, McClean, Lucas,

Ross, Weber, Markowitz, and others I haven’t mentioned here, and… Walt. He was a great friend to Terry, and it was demonstrated as they volleyed back and forth over particular coins. All of these friends make the trip a great adventure. It’s where a great dinner, many laughs and some competition can be had. Sharing what you bought that day, a show and tell for bragging rights. As the goal is to come back home with the most coins, Terry and I often bet. Most of the time, Terry wins this competition. We bet on other things but for the quantity brought home, I haven’t won yet. He currently holds the $10 bill we pass back and forth when we bet. I’ll get him next time…I will. Terry is a great caretaker and steward of these important coins, which is very important to him. He spends hours studying them, cataloging them, and preserving the entirety of memorabilia associated with each coin and its provenance. He has told me that IF he were offered a CC #1 AU 50 Coin- new discovery- with no pedigree, or an XF coin of the same variety and a long pedigree, he would buy the XF with pedigree every time. He says pedigree is the most important factor in large cent collecting. His extensive library was custom built to house fine editions of the early auction catalogs by Elder, Chapman and others…pedigree. His commitment to this hobby and specifically Early Copper is relentless. He completed his Sheldon variety set in 2008. He was first to complete the Mid Dates including the 1825 N-5. As Regional Chairman for EAC, he single-handedly served as convention chairman, hosting the EAC Convention in Traverse City in 2018. He is a lifetime member of ANA, EAC, and a member of C4 and CSNS, and was part of the first meeting of the Boyz of ’94 at Steve Ellwsorth’s. Currently, Terry is the Vice President of EAC. Coins seem to be a common theme in his life, and to further give you some idea of this, he recounts that while on the couch, one of his Chihuahuas, Oliver, hit the keyboard with his paw when he got startled, and actually bought a large cent that Terry was bidding on. Oh, and two of his dogs are named Sheldon and Homer… go figure. Well, it’s time to get ready for the Auction. I tend to think it’s a celebration. This publication; the cataloging by Bob, photography by Lyle, and coordination by Chris is extraordinary. Team McCawley is at the top of their craft and will make this sale special. This Auction represents the dedication, hard work, and patience of a carefully curated collection by a master collector, Terry Denman. I feel honored to have been part of this Master Class. You won’t want to miss this one, or any of the coins in this sale. These are important coins and will likely be held for some time to come by their new owners. I hope you are fortunate to add the Denman pedigree to your collection…. Springfield, MO., Sale during Covid; Chris dealing with Klosterboer, Terry is looking for coins elsewhere!

MIDDLE DATE LARGE CENTS

NEWCOMB PLATE COIN

LOT 1

1816 N-1 R4 PCGS graded MS65 Brown, CAC Approved . Glossy light brown blending to light olive and chocolate in protected areas where the surfaces are frosty. Subtle traces of very faded mint red are visible in protected areas on the left side of the reverse, and the eye appeal of this cent is excellent. Smooth with trivial marks including a spot of darker toning against the left side of star 8 and a tiny planchet chip right of the F in OF. MDS, die state c, with a series of rim cuds from star 8 to star 11 but the reverse is uncracked. One of only two examples of this scarce variety that is graded mint state by EAC grading standards. Called MS60+ and CC#2 in the Noyes census (William C. Noyes), his photo #27654. Our grade is MS60+ as well. This cent is illustrated on Plate I (obverse 1-2, reverse A) in Howard R. Newcomb’s 1944 reference United States Copper Cents 1816-1857. And it comes with a very impressive provenance that includes several of the brightest luminaries in the world of US Large Cent collecting. A great cent to kick off the sale of this superior collection. 36523.65/30811024 Ex Henry C. Hines-Dr. William H. Sheldon-C. Douglas Smith 10/1981-R. E. “Ted” Naftzger, Jr. 5/1986-C. RARE TERMINAL STATE N-1

LOT 2 1816 N-1 R4 VG10 . Glossy steel brown and chocolate with lighter brown in protected areas. No corrosion with smooth surfaces are even wear. Just minor contact marks consistent with the grade including a dull rim nick right of star 8 and two more at ERI. Very rare LDS, die state e, with a bold cud break connecting NITE to the rim above. The cud consumed so much of the planchet that the opposing dentils at stars 4-5 are very weak. Graded VF20 net F12 and finest of the die state in the Noyes census, his photo #33198. A very important piece for the collector of significant die states.

Ex Joe D’Agostino at the 1994 EAC Convention-Thomas D. Reynolds 2013-Terry S. Denman Collection

LOT 3 1816 N-2 R1 PCGS graded MS64 Brown, CAC Approved . Highly lustrous light olive and steel brown. The surfaces are satiny and choice, and this cent has great eye appeal A nick over star 12 and a spot of different toning under the C in CENT are the best identifying marks. MDS, die state b, with the usual rim cud breaks between stars 8-11. Nicely struck for this variety. The hair at the forehead is nearly full, which is quite unusual. Ted Naftzger noted on his collection envelope (which accompanies the lot) “The best struck N2 seen.” Called MS63 and tied for CC#1 with several others in the Noyes census, his photo #21379. Our grade is MS63. 36526.64/13079737

FINEST 1816 N-3 EX NEWCOMB

LOT 4 1816 N-3 R4 PCGS graded MS65BN . Lustrous light bluish steel brown with underlying faded mint color in protected areas, about 10% of both sides showing some faded red. The surfaces are satiny and this cent has outstanding eye appeal. Nicely struck EDS, before the dies clashed, but with the usual series of small rim cud breaks between stars 8-11. The only notable marks are some small spots of darker olive and steel toning (not carbon) including one near the dentils over star 4 and another close before the eye. Graded MS63 Choice and finest known in both the Noyes and Bland census lists, Noyes photo #21552. This is finer of only two known in mint state. Our grade is MS63. 36529.65/13092866

LOT 5 1816 N-3 R4 F15 . Rather glossy olive brown and steel. Mostly smooth but there is a dusting of very fine carbon or verdigris in a few protected areas on the reverse. The notable marks are a dull nick left of the date and another vertical one under the ear. MDS with flowlined fields on the reverse and the always present rim cud from star 8 to star 11.

LOT 6 1816 N-4 R2 PCGS graded MS63 Brown . Glossy medium chocolate brown delicately mottled with tan and lighter brown, mostly on the reverse. Mint frost covers the protected areas and this cent has very nice eye appeal. Essentially void of marks or other defects. A spot of lighter brown toning midway between the date and star 13 and a tiny rim nick left of star 6 can help identify this cent. E-MDS, die state b. The lump under the first 1 and dash at CA are dull but visible. Graded MS60 and tied for CC#5 in the Noyes census, his photo #22131. Our grade is MS60. 36532.63/30809059

LOT 7 1816 N-5 R3 PCGS graded MS65 Brown . Lustrous light to medium steel brown, the reverse a few shades lighter than the obverse. The surfaces are satiny and the eye appeal is excellent. This cent is virtually flawless except for some microscopic specks of darker bluish steel toning on both sides and a minor planchet lamination at the dentils over the left side of the M in AMERICA (as struck). A small spot of the darker steel toning at the right foot of the E in CENT is a good identifying mark. M-LDS, die state c, with flowlined fields and many of the dentils weak or missing. The die lines covering the neck are gone and the repunching at the bottom of the N in CENT is nearly gone. Called MS60+ and tied for CC#4 in the Bland census. Noyes says Mint State netted to AU55 for the tiny planchet lamination, his photo #35265. Our grade is MS60+, but the MS65 grade assigned by PCGS attests to the exceptional eye appeal this cent offers. 36535.65/13092870 Ex Dr. George P. French, B. Max Mehl 1929 FPL, lot 378A-T. LOT 10 1816 N-8 R3 Repunched 8, PCGS graded MS62 Brown . Frosty light to medium brown with satiny luster covering the protected areas. A small spot of reddish chocolate toning on the bust tip and a few faint hairline scratches under the line below CENT are the notable defects. EDS, die state a, before any rim cud breaks on the obverse. The obverse is slightly misaligned to K-10 while the reverse is reasonably well centered on the planchet. FINEST 1816 N-8

LOT 11 1816 N-8 R3 Repunched 8, PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown, CAC Approved . Beautiful frosty mint red fading to lustrous bluish steel brown, at least 20% of the mellowed mint color remaining, mostly on the obverse. The surfaces are satiny and virtually flawless. A small tick left of star 9 and a speck of darker toning near the dentils midway between stars 11 & 12 are the best identifying marks. M-LDS, die state c, with strong rim cud breaks at stars 8.5-10 and 11-12. The terminal rim cud at stars 3-4 has not formed as those dentils are clearly visible on this example. The repunching over the left top of the 8 is weak but still visible. A bit softly struck on the right sides while the left sides are fully impressed, the result of the die faces not being in perfect axial alignment (die faces not parallel). Otherwise this piece is a gem. A beautiful cent, finest known of this scarce die variety. Our grade is MS64. 36545.64/15104750

LOT 12 1816 N-9 R3 Repunched 18, PCGS graded MS63 Brown . Lustrous medium steel brown and light chocolate with delicate overtones of light bluish steel, especially on the obverse. The reverse is a shade or two lighter than the obverse with subtle hints of very faded mint red in protected areas. The only marks are a light horizontal nick just right of the mouth, another light nick in the field off the brow lock, plus a few tiny ticks on the chin. A tiny swipe of darker toning at the lower point of star 8 is a good identifying mark. Otherwise this cent is choice and the eye appeal is excellent. E-MDS, die state a, with clear repunching left of the lower loop of the 8 and to the left from the peak and base of the second 1. Fine radial die flowlines cover the fields on both sides and the dentils are complete. A really nice example of a variety that is prohibitively rare in true mint state grades (three known, one of which is in the ANS Museum Collection). Graded MS60 and tied for second finest known in the Bland census. Called MS62 and CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #27604. Our grade is MS60+ .
