N-17 WITH CUDS
LOT 422 1851 N-17 R2 AU55. Mint state sharpness but the reverse has traces of lacquer or Care in protected areas. Frosty medium brown and light chocolate mixed with hints of reddish chocolate brown toning on the reverse. LDS, die state c, with a narrow but clearly defined series of small rim cud breaks at stars 1-2. Rarely seen with these small cuds visible.
Ex Robison Collection, Stack’s 12/2/1982:50-Carvin Goodridge Collection-Goodridge Estate, McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldbergs 6/2/2013:590 (includes the Goodridge collection envelope and last lot ticket)
LOT 423 1851 N-20 R3+ Repunched 1’s, PCGS graded MS64 Brown. Lustrous golden light olive and tan. Satiny and very attractive. The only marks are a few very tiny specks of darker toning right of star 2 and a small tick on the diagonal of N in CENT. There are very shallow low spots on the neck and in the field before the nose, and a deeper low spot rings the inside of the wreath, all as struck with lubricant on the dies. E-MDS, die state a late. The repunching on the 1’s is dull but obvious and the die lines in the field at the date are visible. Our grade is MS63. Tied for CC#5 overall but finest of the N-20 die state in the Grellman census (states a & b are N-20 while state c equates to Newcomb’s old #28). The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. Comes with a nice provenance. 406707.64/26560594
