 PEDIGREED S-185 LATE STATE

LOT 180 1798 S-185 R2 Small 8, Style II Hair, PCGS graded AU50. Mostly glossy olive brown and chocolate with uniform extremely faint granularity well hidden under the attractive toning. No verdigris, and the only marks are a tiny rim nick opposite the neck and a small planchet chip at the dentils over CA (as struck). Rare TDS, Breen state VIII, with a clearly defined rim cud that connects IC in AMERICA to the rim above. The earlier die crack from the rim to the throat now extends through the head to the bottom of the B. A neat die state that comes with a very nice provenance. Graded EF40 net VF20 and tied for CC#20 in the Noyes census (but tied for CC#2 of the terminal die state), his photo #23339. Bland says net VF35 and tied for CC#5. Our grade is EF45 sharpness net VF35. The attribution and Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS label. 36122.50/32782966 Ex Henry C. Hines-Clayton L. Wallace, Stack’s 12/1963:507-C.
