EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 159 1796 S-117 R5+ Draped Bust PCGS graded AG3. Glossy chocolate and steel brown. Smooth, just worn with trivial marks. Many of the details on the reverse are significantly sharper but the strike is uneven on that side: strong on the right, weak on the left. The bottom of the date is worn into the rim but the rest is clear. E-MDS. Our grade is AG3. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. 35864.03/38483127

LOT 156 1796 S-90 R5+ Liberty Cap Fair-2+. Rather glossy dark olive brown and steel. The highpoints are smooth but fine roughness covers the fields and protected areas. No verdigris. The only mark is a rim bruise at the T in LIBERTY. The date and LIBERTY are easily readable but less than half the legends on the reverse remain visible. Struck with the reverse nearly upset head-to-head rather than the normal head-to-foot orientation.

Ex Heritage Auctions #131949:21039

LOT 160 1797 S-121b R3- Gripped Edge VG10. Sharpness F12 but covered with microscopic granularity in the fields and protected areas. No verdigris, just small contact marks including a minor rim nick below the bust. M-LDS with strong cracks behind the portrait. Slightly glossy olive brown with lighter brown on the highpoints. The date and legends are strong and the grip marks are clear.

LOT 157 Pair of 1796 Cents. Includes S-91 R3 Liberty Cap Fair-2+, and S-101 R5- Draped Bust VG10 net AG3 for strong dents. Lot of 2 coins.

Acquired by Lucien Birkler 2/2/1959 (includes the Birkler collection envelope)

From the Lucien Birkler Collection (includes the Birkler collection envelopes)

LOT 161 1797 S-129 R5 M over E in AMERICA, G5. Slightly sharper but the fields and protected areas are covered with fine roughness. No verdigris and the only significant mark is a diagonal nick off the chin. Slightly glossy dark steel and olive brown. MDS, Breen state II. The date is clear as are most of the legends, the only weakness being along the bottom of the reverse. The M over E feature is obvious. A tough variety.

LOT 158 1796 S-108 R4 Draped Bust PCGS graded VG10. Glossy chocolate and steel brown. Smooth and choice with light wear and no significant marks. A thin nick over the upper end of the hair ribbon and a pair of microscopic hairline scratches under ATE are the only notable marks. MDS, Breen state III, with a die crack from the 6 through the bust. Our grade is VG10. The Jack Conour Collection provenance is noted on the PCGS label. 1404.10/27492974
