LOT 86 1788 Machin’s Mills Vlack 13-88CT, Miller 101-D, R4 PCGS VF Detail, Rim Damage. Glossy light brown with smooth surfaces, but there are a few deep digs at the rims: one at DE in INDE and two just right of the date. All three digs created bulges on the opposite side of the planchet. Otherwise nice with minor planchet voids. The date is bold. Later die state with cracks and a bulge that nearly obliterates the III. This variety is collected with both the Machin’s and Connecticut series. The reverse die (D) was used to strike two different varieties in the Connecticut series: Miller 2-D and Miller 16.1-D. Our grade is net F15. The attribution and Twin Leaf provenance are noted on the PCGS label. 687740-98/36652161

1786 NO COULTER
LOT 87 1786 New Jersey Maris 12-G R4 No Coulter, PCGS graded VF25. Slightly glossy medium chocolate brown with lighter brown on the devices. Reasonably smooth but a glass reveals microscopic roughness covering the planchet with peeps of very fine verdigris in some protected areas. The only marks is a small rim nick left of the date. A curved planchet clip that affects the dentils at the top of the obverse is a good identifying feature. The date was softly impressed into the die but it is complete and easily readable. The legends are clear. Struck in medal turn, head-to-head. Overall a nice example of the “No Coulter” type, and it comes with a very nice provenance. The Syd Martin Collection provenance is noted on the PCGS label. 494.25/34175463
