EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 503 1856 N-16 R2+ Italic 5, AU50. Lustrous light steel brown with peeps of mellowed mint red on both sides. Looks mint state but there is a hint of rub on the very highest points of the devices. The only defect is a small patch of fine verdigris in the dentils over star 2. MDS, die state b. The earlier die lines at the dentils under the date and star 1 are gone (Newcomb’s old #15).

LOT 506 1857 N-3 R5 Small Date PCGS graded PR64+ Brown, CAC Approved. Beautiful bluish steel and olive with some lighter brown in protected areas on the reverse. The fields are reflective and covered with extremely fine die polishing lines. The stars and devices are as sharp as they ever get and this piece has great eye appeal. Just a couple trivial defects including a spot of brown toning on the bust and another at the dentil tips over star 8. Neither mark catches your eye. A microscopic line from the nose to star 3 is from the die and is found on many examples of the variety. A really nice example of this proof-only variety. Our grade is Proof-63+ . LOT 504 1857 N-1 R1 Large Date, PCGS graded MS63 Brown. Lustrous light olive and medium brown with 5-10% of the planchet showing mint red. Satiny and quite attractive, free of any spots or notable contact marks. MDS, die state b. Our grade is MS60+ . The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. 389634.63/38359356

LOT 505 1857 N-1 R1 Large Date, ANACS graded AU55. Frosty medium brown with lighter brown in some of the protected areas. The only mark is a pin prick under the right corner of the eye. M-LDS, die state b. The earlier die lines on the reverse are gone, lost in flowlines. Our grade is AU50. The attribution is noted on the ANACS label. 7464432
