SESSION TWO SELECTIONS FROM FRED BORCHERDT’S HALL OF FAME COLLECTION

LOT 520 1839 N-9 R2 Silly Head EF45+. Beautiful glossy medium brown with mint frost in the protected areas. Lightly worn with only trivial marks on the cheek, none notable. Very close to AU50 with great eye appeal. The best identifying marks are two very shallow planchet flakes on the rim at TAT. EDS but not quite the earliest, state b early, with a fine bisecting die crack on the obverse, but the early pantograph lines at the dentil tips over ST and MER are still visible. From the Fred H. LOT 523 1839 N-13 R2 Booby Head EF45+. Very attractive frosty tan and light brown with medium steel brown toning on the highpoints. Sharply struck with just a light touch of wear on the highpoints. Just a few trivial marks including a couple very tiny rim nicks at stars 5-7 and a pair of faint hairline scratches at the stem tip. Very close to AU50. LDS, die state c, with a very narrow rim cud from star 8 to star 10, but only portions of the cud near star 9 are visible due to centering and wear. The die cracks on the reverse are clear. LOT 521 1839 N-9 R2 Silly Head AU50. Very attractive frosty light brown with steel brown toning on the highpoints. Satiny mint luster covers the fields and there is just a light touch of friction on the highpoints. The only contact marks are a line of tiny ticks below star 13. The best identifying feature is a subtle puff of slightly darker brown toning between the forelock and star 5. MDS, state d, with a clearly defined rim cud at star 6 halfway to the adjacent stars. LOT 524 1839 N-14 R3 Booby Head VF25. Much sharper than the assigned grade but there is a rather ugly spot between star 1 and the throat, and the spot has been abraded. A few additional scratches show on the neck; the reverse is smooth and attractive with no notable defects. Glossy light to medium brown with darker chocolate in the spot. LDS, die state b. LOT 525 Lot of 8 Cents, 1840-1853, grading F12 to F15. Includes 1840 N-2 Small 18 over Large 18, 1841 N-2, 1846 N-14 Tall Date, 1848 N-41, 1851 N-31, 1851 unattributed, 1853 N-2, and 1853 N-21. A couple are sharper with defects but most are attractive glossy brown and chocolate. Lot of 8 coins. From the Fred H. Borcherdt Collection

LOT 522 1839 N-12 R4 Booby Head VG10. At least 5 points sharper but fine corrosion and verdigris covers the fields on the reverse. The reverse is mostly smooth and is a glossy chocolate and steel brown. The reverse is darker olive brown and steel. LDS, die state c, with a strong die crack that bisects the obverse. Comes with a nice provenance for a modest cent.
