EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 517 1839 N-4 R1 Silly Head EF40. Sharpness closer to mint state but cleaned and beautifully retoned glossy light to medium chocolate brown. The only marks are some tiny specks of greenish verdigris at stars 11-13 and a small planchet flake on the rim at the O in OF (as struck). MDS, die state b. The dash at the dentils left of the 9 is gone but the one to the right is still faintly visible. From the Fred H. Borcherdt Collection

LOT 514 1838 N-11 R2 EF45+. Choice glossy light brown with slightly darker brown on the devices. Satiny mint frost covers the fields on both sides and this cent is nearly flawless. A speck of darker toning off the lower right point of star 4 is the only notable mark. EDS, die state a, with crisp dentils around both sides. The spike from the end of the leaf over

LOT 518 1839 N-6 R2 Booby Head EF45. Glossy light to medium brown woodgrained with some darker chocolate brown on the obverse. The fields on the obverse are smooth; the ones on the reverse are frosty. A thin diagonal nick between star 5 and the brow lock is the only notable mark. M-LDS, die state c, with die cracks on the reverse. The earlier guide line at the dentils over OF is weak and quite faint. From the Fred H. Borcherdt Collection

LOT 515 1839/6 N-1 R3+ Overdate 9 over 6 AG3. Several points sharper but dark steel and covered with fine to moderate roughness. No verdigris but there are some marks on the rim, the two at the bottom of the reverse being the strongest. EDS, die state a, before the obverse die cracked. The overdate feature is clear. LOT 519 1839 N-8 R1 Head of 1840 EF45+. Very attractive glossy light olive and brown. Lightly worn with smooth surfaces and just a few very light contact marks, mostly on the cheek but there is a tiny pinprick in the field over the bust tip. A microscopic planchet clip weakens the dentils at star 4 and over the opposing T in UNITED (as struck). E-MDS, die state b. The earlier die line at the berry near the E in ONE is gone, and the fields are just starting to show microscopic flowlines from the dentils. From the Fred H. Borcherdt Collection

LOT 516 1839/6 N-1 R3+ Overdate 9 over 6 VG10. Glossy light to medium olive brown and chocolate. Smooth with very nice eye appeal for the grade; the only significant mark is a dull nick at the bottom of star 13. LDS, die state c, with a complete bisecting crack across the obverse.
