SESSION TWO SELECTIONS FROM FRED BORCHERDT’S HALL OF FAME COLLECTION

LOT 495 1837 N-8 R1 Plain Hair Cord EF45+. Lustrous golden tan. Sharp with very little wear, but there are nicks on the face and in the field before the portrait plus a dark spot at the right top of the E in CENT. E-MDS, die state b. The die lines at ERIC are dull but still visible and there is a dull point down from the end of the wreath stem. This is Newcomb’s #8. From the Fred H. Borcherdt Collection

LOT 498 1837 N-10 R1 Beaded Hair Cord AU55. The “Accessory N” variety. Lustrous tan with a small puff of steel brown toning on AT in STATES. A very attractive cent with mint state eye appeal, but there is a trace of rub on the highest points of the hair. The only mark is a small but shiny punch between the tops of the C & A in AMERICA. M-LDS, die state e, with flowlined fields and very narrow rim cuds on the lower part of the obverse. Traces of the stray N punched into the wreath below the N in UNITED are clearly visible. LOT 496 1837 N-8/7 R1 Plain Hair Cord EF45. Glossy olive brown and chocolate with frosty tan in protected areas. Smooth and attractive with light wear and no notable defects, just trivial contact marks. M-LDS, die state d. The die lines at ERIC are gone. This is Newcomb’s #7. From the Fred H. LOT 499 1837 N-11 R1 Beaded Hair Cord AU50. Frosty brown and light chocolate. Fine flowline luster shows in the fields and the only defect is fine dirt in protected areas on the reverse. Sharply struck with just a touch of friction on the highest points. LDS, die state e, with die cracks on the reverse and a narrow rim cud at S-O. Comes with a nice provenance.

LOT 497 1837 N-9 R1 Beaded Hair Cord AU58. Lustrous light olive and sea green, a classic “Greenie” with very nice eye appeal. Looks mint state but there is a hint of rub on the very highest points of the hair plus a few minor contact marks on the cheek. A speck of lighter toning over the right side of the O in ONE can identify this cent. MDS, die state f, with fine die cracks on the obverse and a small but clear rim cud at star 11. From the Fred H. LOT 500 1837 N-12 R3 Beaded Hair Cord VF25. The “Accessory E” variety. Glossy medium brown and chocolate. Slightly sharper but there is a scratch at ES-O and a few shorter ones at ERIC. E-MDS, die state a. The fields are lightly flowlined but the repunching on the left bottom of the 8 is still clear. Parts of the stray E in the wreath below the E in AMERICA is clear.
