SESSION TWO SELECTIONS FROM FRED BORCHERDT’S HALL OF FAME COLLECTION 

RARE LATE STATE N-4 EX STARR

LOT 450 1830 N-4 R2 VG8. Slightly sharper but the fields and protected areas are covered with extremely faint granularity that dulls the gloss. No marks or verdigris. Slightly glossy olive brown and steel. M-LDS, die state c, with a slightly sunken retained cud break under the date. A rare die state that comes with a nice provenance.  Ex Floyd T. LOT 453 1830 N-8 R1 EF45. Choice frosty medium brown and light chocolate. Sharply struck with very light wear and great eye appeal. Just a few ticks on the jawline near the earlobe and a very thin nick below the chin. EDS, die state a, with satiny fields and no cracks. The repunching on the left side of the 1 is sharp. Ex M. H. LOT 451 1830 N-5 R3 VF35. Very attractive glossy light brown with flowline luster in the protected areas. There are a few wisps of reddish brown toning mixed in on the obverse. Lightly worn with choice surfaces that suggest a slightly higher grade, but the strike is a bit soft. LDS with the reverse slightly misaligned to K-8. From the Fred H. Borcherdt Collection

LOT 452 1830 N-6 R4 Medium Letters VF20. Glossy light brown with steel brown on the highpoints. Smooth with a few minor marks including a couple thin nicks in the hair over BE, a light rim bruise under the end of the wreath ribbon, and a fine vertical scratch touching the left side of the O in ONE. MDS, die state a, with an uncracked obverse. Nicely struck

LOT 454 1831 N-1 R1 Large Letters AU50. Lustrous tan and light brown with steel brown highpoints and puffs of reddish brown toning on both sides, mostly on the reverse. The surfaces are satiny and there is just a hint of friction on the highest points of the devices, but the uneven toning is a distraction. Otherwise this cent is very close to mint state.
