SESSION TWO SELECTIONS FROM FRED BORCHERDT’S HALL OF FAME COLLECTION

LOT 444 1829 N-8 R1 Large Letters AU50. Lustrous steel brown with hints of very faded mint color showing in a couple of the protected areas. A very attractive cent with light friction on the highpoints and satiny luster in the fields. The only mark is a diagonal nick right of the nostril. LOT 441 1829 N-6 R1 Large Letters AU50. Glossy light brown and olive with frost covering the protected areas. An arc of lustrous tan shows at the top of the reverse. Sharply struck with light wear on the devices, trivial marks, and very nice eye appeal. EDS with the reverse rotated 30 degrees CCW. From the Fred H. Borcherdt Collection

LOT 442 1829 N-7 R3 Large Letters F15. Slightly sharper with microscopic roughness hidden under rather glossy chocolate and olive brown toning. No verdigris and the only mark is a dull nick or planchet void high on the neck at the throat. E-MDS, die state c early, with four “Wheelspoke” cracks on the reverse. The radial crack to the ribbon loop is faint but the other three are clear. Ex Henry T. Hettger-Fred H. Borcherdt Collection

LOT 445 1829 N-9 R4 Medium Letters VF25. Glossy brown and light chocolate with a puff of reddish brown at stars 11 & 12 and another smaller one at star 8. Nicely struck with good hair details and only minor weakness in the leaves. The reverse is choice, void of any marks or other distractions. E-MDS, die state b, with die cracks on the obverse, but the final crack through stars 1-5 has not formed. Comes with a nice provenance. Ex Henry C. Hines 10/28/1949-Willard C. Blaisdell 9/1976 R. E. LOT 443 1829 N-7 R3 Large Letters VF25. Five points sharper but there are a half dozen very fine vertical scratches in the field before the portrait and a tiny scratch down from the left point of star 11. Otherwise the surfaces are quite nice. Glossy steel brown and chocolate. TDS, die state f, with five strong “Wheelspoke” cracks on the reverse plus additional cracks inside the wreath. The fields on the obverse and slightly reflective thanks to a fresh die polishing, and frost shows in the protected areas on the reverse. Ex Dennis Mendelson-George Ramont-Fred H. LOT 446 1830 N-1 R1 VF25. Considerably sharper and the toning is a very attractive glossy tan and light brown with frost in protected areas, but there are numerous contact marks. The notable marks are a light rim bruise under the 30, several smaller rim nicks on the reverse, and a dull nick over the N in CENT. Sharply struck EDS, die state a, with an uncracked obverse.
