EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 438 1829 N-3 R3 Medium Letters VF25. Glossy medium olive brown and chocolate woodgrained with lighter brown on the reverse. Mint frost covers the protected areas, especially on the reverse, and this cent has the surfaces of a significantly higher grade. Unfortunately the strike is relatively weak, as usual, especially along the top of the portrait and in the opposing leaves at the bottom of the wreath. MDS. No marks and the fields are hard and slightly reflective. From the Fred H. Borcherdt Collection

LOT 435 1828 N-9 R4 VF20. Slightly sharper but lightly cleaned and nicely retoned glossy olive and chocolate with steel overtones. The surfaces are smooth and the only notable mark is a tiny rim bruise right of the date. MDS.  From the Fred H. Borcherdt Collection

LOT 439 1829 N-4 R4 Large Letters F15. Sharpness VF35 but covered with fine granularity and microscopic pitting under slightly glossy chocolate and steel brown toning. No marks or verdigris. Sharply struck EDS, die state a, with an uncracked reverse. Looks better than the assigned grade might imply. Ex M. H. Bolender 2/1936-unknown-Fred H. Borcherdt Collection

LOT 436 1828 N-12 R3+ EF40. Glossy brown and light chocolate darker steel brown with frosty lighter brown in some of the protected areas. The frosty light brown at stars 11-13 is delicately mottled with darker steel brown. Smooth and attractive with slightly reflective fields on the obverse from a fresh die polishing. The only notable contact mark is a scratch near the dentils from star 3 to star 4. EDS. Graded EF40 net VF35 and tied for CC#2 with the ANS example in the Noyes census, his photo #34005. LOT 440 1829 N-5 R3 Medium Letters VF25. Slightly sharper but there are microscopic hairlines on both sides, mostly inside the wreath, and they lighten the toning in that area. Glossy light olive and medium brown. A tiny vertical tick over the left side of the E in CENT is the only notable mark. M-LDS, die state d, with crumbling in the dentils at star 11. The fields on the obverse are hard and slightly reflective from a fresh die polishing. The strike along the top of the portrait and the opposing leaves at the bottom of the wreath are weakly struck, as usual. From the Fred H. Borcherdt Collection

LOT 437 olive brown and. Sharpness VF30 but covered with extremely fine roughness under mostly glossy dark olive brown and steel toning. The only notable marks are a dull nick low on the neck and a faint horizontal scratch over ONE. MDS, die state a, with a crack through stars 1-4. Ex YSC 11/1930-Fred H. Clymer-Fred H.
