EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 404 1824/2 N-1 R1 Overdate 4 over 2 VF20. Cleaned, perhaps very lightly whizzed, and partially retoned golden light tan and steel with artificial cartwheel luster. No corrosion, verdigris, or contact marks. Looks like a nice cent that should have been left alone. E-MDS, die state c, with crumbling in the dentils at stars 3 & 4. The overdate is clear. LOT 405 1825 N-1 R4 F12. Glossy light brown with medium brown toning on the highpoints. A sharp cent but there is a relatively strong rim dent at star 13, and the details in the hair and stars have been expertly enhanced to give this cent very nice eye appeal. The work was accomplished with great skill, good enough to make this cent an important part of the Newcomb and Starr collections. E-MDS, die state b, with a fine die crack through the base of the date but before any crumbling or cud breaks in the dentils on the obverse. This is the plate coin for the variety in the Newcomb reference (Plate IV, item 1-A). Comes with a great provenance.  Ex Howard R. Newcomb, J. C. Morgenthau & Co., 5/16/1945:563-Floyd T. LOT 406 1825 N-1 R4 F15. At least 10 points sharper but covered with very fine roughness and there are a couple rim bruises at OF-A. Slightly glossy dark steel and olive brown with lighter steel on the devices. M-LDS, die state d, with clearly defined cud breaks from star 7.5 to above star 9. A rare die state.  From the Fred H.
