SESSION TWO SELECTIONS FROM FRED BORCHERDT’S HALL OF FAME COLLECTION 

CHOICE 1823/2 OVERDATE

LOT 401 1823/2 N-1 R2 Overdate 3 over 2 VF35. Choice glossy light brown mixed with a bit of light chocolate. Smooth and choice. A thin vertical nick hidden against the hair on the right side of the face is the best identifying mark. EDS, die state a, with no cracks or dentil fusing. The overdate feature is strong. A very nice cent, just lightly worn.  From the Fred H. Borcherdt Collection (includes an old 1-inch collection envelope)

LOT 402 1823 N-2 R2 VF20. Glossy olive brown and chocolate with lighter brown in the fields. Smooth with a few more light contact marks than you like at this level of sharpness. A nearly horizontal nick close under the right corner of the E in ONE is the only significant mark. MDS, die state c, with a rim cud from star 4 to star 6.5 with a small void in the cud at star 6. A nice mid-grade example of a variety that is difficult to find in high grade.  Ex George Ramont-Fred H. Borcherdt Collection (includes the Ramont collection envelope)

 CHOICE 1823 RESTRIKE

LOT 403 1823 Restrike MS64. Choice lustrous light bluish steel and olive with generous traces of mellowed red on both sides. The only marks are three tiny specks of fine carbon at the date. LDS, die state g, with all the cuds and die cracks including the one at TE in STATES down through the wreath. The fields on both sides are slightly reflective thanks to a fresh die polishing to minimize the extensive die rust, and some of the die polishing lines are still visible. A really nice example of this private restrike that was struck using discarded dies from the US Mint.  From the Fred H. Borcherdt Collection
