EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 396 1821 N-1 R1 EF40. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate with frosty lighter brown in protected areas. Sharply struck with very light wear on the devices, but there are some contact marks including a few pinpricks over star 7, another near the dentils under star 1, and a more-obvious dull nick over EN in CENT. Very early die state, die state a, with hard, slightly reflective fields on both

LOT 399 1822 N-9 R5- F15+. Sharpness VF25 with traces of microscopic pitting on the obverse. Otherwise smooth with rather glossy chocolate brown toning and lighter brown on the devices thanks to a delicate cleaning. The only notable contact marks are three small, dull nicks just right of star 5. Rare M-LDS, die state c, with a slightly raised retained cud break at TES. LOT 397 1821 N-2 R1 VF30. Slightly sharper but lightly cleaned, now a glossy mix of chocolate, medium brown, and olive. There are no marks other than some faint hairlines from the old cleaning. Sharply struck M-LDS, die state c. The die line from the end of the bust is gone but there is no crumbling in the dentils at stars 6-7. From the Fred H. Borcherdt Collection

LOT 400 1822 N-9 R5- G5+. Glossy chocolate with lighter steel brown covering the devices. Smooth with nice eye appeal for the grade, just worn. The only marks are three shallow planchet flakes: one over both T’s in STATES and another on the rim at star 1. Rare LDS, die state d, with a fully raised cud break at TES. Graded G6 by Del Bland. Only 5 examples are listed with a full cud plus a couple others with a nearly fully raised but retained cud and listed in the Noyes census, and the finest of that elite group grades VG7. LOT 398 1822 N-4 R2 VF35. Glossy steel with frosty lighter brown and tan in protected areas. Ten points sharper but there is an area of very fine roughness at the tip of the coronet. Otherwise smooth and a few small contact marks including a few light ticks in the field before the portrait and a shallow dig over the right top of the E in ONE.
