SESSION TWO SELECTIONS FROM FRED BORCHERDT’S HALL OF FAME COLLECTION

LOT 391 1820 N-11 R2 Large Date EF40. Sharpness near mint state with very light wear on the devices, but there are traces of fine verdigris and crud in protected areas on both sides, mostly on the obverse. The rest of the planchet is smooth and frosty with underlying mint luster. Glossy chocolate and medium brown with frosty steel brown on most of the reverse. MDS, die state b, with only portions of the inner circle on the obverse still visible. The repunching at the base of the T in CENT is still clear. Ex C. Douglas Smith 6/1981-Fred H. LOT 392 1820 N-12 R3 Large Date VF35. Glossy light olive brown. Smooth with minor contact marks including a nick in the hair above the E and a fine vertical scratch just left of the 2 in the date. MDS, die state a late. The lump over star 4 is dull and weak but still visible. From the Fred H. Borcherdt Collection

LOT 393 1820 N-13 R1 Large Date MS63. Choice lustrous light bluish steel brown with traces of mellowed mint red in protected areas on the obverse. Satiny and sharp with no trace of friction on the highest points of the devices. The only marks are two tiny specks of medium brown toning just right of star 3. Sharply struck MDS, die state a late, with the usual die cracks through the date and stars. Almost certainly another survivor from the Randall Hoard. A great date or type coin.  From the Fred H. LOT 394 1820 N-13 R1 Large Date AU55. Lustrous light to medium brown. A sharp mint state cent that has a shallow linear planchet depression on the cheek (as struck). Otherwise just a couple trivial ticks on the jaw. MDS, die state a late, the usual Randall Hoard die state for the variety. From the Fred H. Borcherdt Collection

LOT 395 1820 N-14 R5- Large Date F15+. Glossy light to medium steel brown. Smooth and attractive with moderate wear. The only notable marks are a fine diagonal planchet crease or scratch at the left bottom of the O in ONE and a collection of tiny pits at the wreath ribbon under the E in CENT..
