SESSION TWO SELECTIONS FROM FRED BORCHERDT’S HALL OF FAME COLLECTION

LOT 373 1818 N-8 R3 VF35. Glossy chocolate and olive brown with lighter brown and sea green in the fields. Possibly lightly cleaned long ago but the toning is attractive. The only mark is a light diagonal scratch in the field before the mouth. E-MDS, die state b, with crumbling connecting three dentils over the right side of star 3. Ex Dean Johnson 1976-Fred H. Borcherdt Collection

 CHOICE RED & BROWN N-10

LOT 374 1818 N-10 R1 MS63. Choice lustrous mint red fading to steel brown with about a third of the planchet showing mint color. A small puff of slightly darker steel brown toning right of the D in UNITED is the best identifying mark. LDS, die state b, with flowlined fields on both sides and the usual die cracks on the obverse. Most likely from the famous Randall Hoard of mint state cents that was discovered following the US Civil War, but this is a particularly nice survivor. From the Fred H. Borcherdt Collection

LOT 375 1818 N-10 R1 AU55. Glossy olive brown and steel with lighter brown in protected areas on the obverse. The fields are covered with lustrous mint frost and there are a couple tiny puffs of lighter tan toning on the reverse. Looks mint state but there is a trace of rub on the highest points of the portrait. LDS, die state b, the usual Randal Hoard die state. Ex Rabin-Fred H. Clymer-Fred H. Borcherdt Collection (includes the Clymer collection note)
