EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 367 1818 N-4 R4+ VG10. A sharp cent with the details of a VF35 grade, but both sides are covered with moderate granularity and fine pitting. No marks or verdigris, and the toning is a mostly glossy chocolate and olive brown with a hint of steel. Sharply struck M-LDS, die state c. The obverse is swollen and the radial crack to the outer point of star 3 is strong. The O in ONE is faint, a result of the swelling on the obverse. From the Fred H. Borcherdt Collection

LOT 370 1818 N-6 R1 AU55. Lustrous light brown with slightly darker steel brown on the highpoints of the portrait. Faint peeps of faded mint color can be found in a couple protected areas, but you need a glass to find them. Looks mint state with great eye appeal, but there is a trace of friction on the very highest points of the portrait. Just a couple microscopic ticks on the cheek and a small spot of reddish brown toning right of star 13. MDS, die state b, with dull die lapping lines at ICA. Ex George Ramont-Fred H. LOT 368 1818 N-4 R4+ F15. Glossy medium chocolate brown mixed with reddish chocolate brown on the reverse. The surfaces are smooth with minor marks on both sides and traces of dirt in protected areas, mostly on the reverse. A very light rim bruise under the first 1 and a short scratch below TE in UNITED are the only significant marks. LDS, die state d. The swelling on the obverse is obvious, the crack to star 3 is bold, and there is an obvious clashmarks in the field off the front of the coronet. From the Fred H. Borcherdt Collection

LOT 371 1818 N-6 R1 EF40. Ten points sharper but there is a dull nick on the chin and a couple stains on the obverse, mostly on the face. Otherwise frosty tan and light brown with steel brown on the highpoints. The reverse is choice. LDS, die state c. The earlier lump inside the bottom of the C in AMERICA is gone. Struck with the reverse rotated 25 degrees CCW. From the Fred H. Borcherdt Collection

LOT 369 1818 N-5 R3 VF30+. Choice glossy brown and light chocolate with frosty lighter brown in the protected areas on both sides. Smooth and lightly worn; a very light rim bruise at the U in UNITED is the only notable mark. LDS, die state c. The die crack at stars 1-3 to the rim left of the date is strong. From the Fred H. LOT 372 1818 N-7 R1 EF45. Slightly sharper with some very light nicks in the field before the portrait. It takes a glass to see the marks, and the eye appeal of this cent suggests a higher grade. The reverse is choice. Lustrous golden tan with steel brown and chocolate toning on the obverse highpoints. LDS, die state d, with crumbling in the dentils at star 5 and a shallow cud break connecting the top of the O in ONE to the rim. Comes with a nice provenance.
