SESSION TWO SELECTIONS FROM FRED BORCHERDT’S HALL OF FAME COLLECTION

LOT 361 1818 N-1 R2 VF30. Choice glossy medium brown with slightly darker brown on the highpoints. Mint frost shows in the fields and protected areas and this cent has great eye appeal for the grade. Lightly worn with no notable marks. Has the eye appeal of a higher grade. VLDS, die state d late. The narrow rim cud at star 2 does not show due to centering, but the die clashmarks in the field before the face are clear. The latest state seen. Struck with the reverse rotated 30 degrees CCW. LOT 364 1818 N-2 R4 VF25. Sharpness EF45 or slightly better but there are traces of very fine verdigris in protected in protected areas on the reverse with more obvious verdigris in protected on most of the reverse. Sharp with very little wear but the eye appeal is not very appealing, especially on the reverse. No contact marks. M-LDS, die state g, with a retained cud break over NIT that is raised most over the N. From the Fred H. Borcherdt Collection

LOT 365 1818 N-2 R4 VG8. Glossy steel brown with some lighter brown in the field before the portrait. Slightly sharper than the assigned grade because of a few small rim nicks on the obverse, notably at stars 1, 9, and 10. The reverse is void of marks and the surfaces are smooth on both sides. LDS, die state i, with a raised beveled retained cud over NI to the center of the T and a fully raised cud break from the middle of the T and ED. A rare die state but not the terminal state. LOT 362 1818 N-2 R4 F15. Slightly sharper with too many small nicks for the sharpness grade. None of the marks is notable and the eye appeal of this cent is quite nice. Glossy medium brown and chocolate with slightly darker chocolate on the highpoints. Sharply struck EDS, die state a, with an uncracked obverse. From the Fred H. Borcherdt Collection

LOT 363 1818 N-2 R4 EF45. A sharp cent with very little actual wear but this cent was lightly cleaned, now frosty bluish steel and olive with some chocolate on the reverse. No notable contact marks; the only mark of any significance is a faint stain in the field over the hair between stars 7 & 8. Sharply struck E-MDS, die state c, with a fine crack connecting stars 4 & 5 and a radial crack to the top of the T in UNITED. The always present die crack through the top of UNITED to the dentils over the adjacent S is still light. Ex Henry T. Hettger-Fred H. Borcherdt Collection

LOT 366 1818 N-4 R4+ F12. Sharpness VF20 with some nicks scattered over the obverse on otherwise smooth surfaces. The notable marks are rim nicks at stars 4, 5, & 8. Glossy light olive and chocolate. Sharply struck EDS, die state a. The O in ONE is strong and there is no radial crack to star 3. A decent example of this tough variety in spite of the contact marks. Ex Charles F.
