EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 346 1817 N-10 R1 VF30. Considerably sharper but cleaned and retoning reddish tan and light steel brown blending to light olive. Deserves a better recoloring. There is a small area of very fine roughness at TES with a few light scratches to the right. Rare LDS, die state d, with a clearly defined rim cud at star 3. LOT 343 1817 N-9 R2 EF45. Glossy light to medium chocolate and olive with lighter brown in protected areas on the reverse. Lightly worn with satiny fields and great eye appeal for the grade. The only defect is a small planchet flake at the dentils under star 12 (as struck). E-MDS, die state a late. The fields are lightly flowlined and the die line from the throat is still visible. There is no trace of a “Mouse” break on top of the head. A fine triple profile shows on the lower half of the nose, the nostril, and on the throat. Ex George Ramont-Fred H. LOT 347 1817 N-11 R1 AU58. Lustrous bluish steel brown with an arc of light brown on the obverse; the reverse is uniform frosty light brown. Sharp with mint state eye appeal, but there is a hint of friction on the very highest points of the devices. No defects. LOT 344 1817 N-9 R2 VF35+. Glossy chocolate brown with flowline luster covering the fields. Lightly worn and the only notable marks are a couple small rim nicks, the strongest off the lower left point of star 3. LDS, die state d, with a fully formed “Mouse” break resting on top of the head under star 8. From the Fred H. Borcherdt Collection

LOT 348 1817 N-12 R3 F15. Glossy olive brown and steel with lighter steel brown on the devices. Moderately worn and void of notable marks. MDS, die state d, with strong die cracks at the date and lower stars including a radial crack connecting star 1 to the dentils. An attractive cent for the grade. From the Fred H. LOT 345 1817 N-10 R1 EF40. A sharp, attractive cent with the details of a slightly higher grade, but there are a couple light scratches under the line below CENT. Otherwise just trivial marks. Glossy chocolate and olive brown with frosty lighter brown in some of the protected areas. EDS, die state a, with sharp dentils on both sides and a sharp diagonal line through the upper left point of star 11. Comes with a nice provenance.
