SESSION TWO SELECTIONS FROM FRED BORCHERDT’S HALL OF FAME COLLECTION

LOT 340 1817 N-6 R1 AU55. A lustrous mint state cent with sharp details but there is a line of tiny ticks on the cheek and some microscopic hairlines in the field before the portrait. Otherwise this cent is choice. Frosty light olive and steel. EDS, die state a, with sharp dentils around both sides. Ex Del N. Bland 2/1984-Fred H. Borcherdt Collection

LOT 337 1817 N-2 R3 EF40. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate. Smooth and sharp with light wear on the devices and trivial marks. A tick hidden in the dentils over the A in STATES and another over the C in CENT are the only notable marks. MDS, die state c. The radial die crack through the first S in STATES reaches the wreath. LOT 338 1817 N-2 R3 VF30. At least 10 points sharper but there is a small dig on the neck and a rim dent at D-S. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth with trivial marks. Attractive glossy medium chocolate brown and steel. MDS, die state d. The radial crack through the first S in STATES passes through the wreath and fades out as it approaches the top of the O in ONE. LOT 341 1817 N-8 R2 AU55. Glossy light brown and chocolate. Satiny mint luster covers the fields and protected areas and this cent has very nice eye appeal. Very little friction on the highpoints and the only notable mark is a spot of reddish brown toning on the lower part of the T in UNITED. E-MDS, die state a, with lightly flowlined fields and no trace of a “Mouse” break on top of the head. From the Fred H. Borcherdt Collection

LOT 339 1817 N-4 R3+ VF35. Ten points sharper but there is a mark on the rim over the AT in STATES, and it is obvious because the toning there is bright golden copper. Not sure what happened there; looks like a drop of gold solder that may have served as a mounting. Otherwise this cent is sharp with very light wear and no notable contact marks. Glossy light to medium brown with dark steel brown at D-STATES. E-MDS, die state c, with a radial crack down from the earlier crack under the right side of star 1. A variety that is quite difficult to find with this level of detail. From the Fred H. Borcherdt Collection

LOT 342 1817 N-8 R2 VF25. Glossy light to medium chocolate brown delicately mottled with lighter brown in the obverse fields. Smooth with light wear. Flowline frost shows in the protected areas. The only marks are a small rim bruise over star 9 and a few ticks on the bottom of the 81. LDS, die state d, with a fully developed “Finger Mouse” break
