EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 334 1817 N-1 R4 F15. Ten points sharper with too many small nicks for the sharpness grade, none notable. A puff of reddish steel toning between star 1 and the neck is the best identifying mark. LDS, die state b, with die cracks on the obverse. The die crack from the tip of the coronet to the dentils left of star 6 is clear and there are a few faux (but clearly defined) rim cuds at D-S. LOT 331 1816 N-2 R1 AU55. Glossy uniform steel brown with peeps of faded mint red on the obverse. Satiny mint frost covers the fields and protected areas and this cent has great eye appeal. Looks mint state but there is a hint of rub on the very highest points of the portrait. MDS, die state b, with fine die cracks on the reverse and rim cuds from star 8 to beyond star 10. Most likely from the Randall Hoard of mint state cents. From the Fred H. Borcherdt Collection

LOT 332 1816 N-3 R4 VF30. Ten points sharper but there are some fine diagonal scratches from below star 4 to the lowest curl. Otherwise smooth with trivial marks and very nice eye appeal. The scratches are barely visible to the unaided eye. Glossy mix of light to medium brown and light chocolate with an arc of medium chocolate through the truncation of the portrait. LOT 335 1817 N-1 R4 VF30. Ten points sharper with very nice eye appeal, but this cent was lightly cleaned and retoned frosty steel and olive brown. There are a few peeps of frosty mellowed red in protected areas, mostly on the reverse; otherwise the toning would look original. VLDS, die state b late. LOT 333 1816 N-8 R3 VF20. Glossy medium brown with chocolate toning on the highpoints. Smooth with nice eye appeal and only minor contact marks. A puff of darker brown toning low on the neck is the best identifying mark. Scarce EDS, die state a, without any rim cuds on the obverse. LOT 336 1817 N-2 R3 VF30. At least 10 points sharper with several tiny contact marks on the obverse and a couple very light rim bruises on the reverse: one at the first S in STATES and another at the second A in AMERICA. None of these marks is distracting but there are too many to ignore on a cent with this level of sharpness. A curved struck-through line between stars 7 & 8 is the best identifying mark (as struck). Glossy olive brown and steel. Sharply struck EDS, die state a, with an uncracked obverse and before the radial crack to the first S in STATES. The fields are hard with no trace of flowlines.
