SESSION TWO SELECTIONS FROM FRED BORCHERDT’S HALL OF FAME COLLECTION

LOT 325 1803 S-247 R3 Mumps Obverse VF25. Ten points sharper but this cent was lightly cleaned and very nicely retoned glossy medium chocolate brown with slightly lighter steel brown highpoints on the obverse. Smooth with just a few trivial marks; a small horizontal nick over the C in CENT is a good identifying mark. LDS, Breen state III, with clear die cracks at UNITE. From the Fred H. LOT 329 1816 N-1 R4 F15. Sharpness VF35 but there is some corrosion at the bottom of the reverse. No notable verdigris and the remainder of the planchet is smooth with minor defects. Mostly glossy chocolate and reddish olive brown mixed with lighter brown on the obverse. M-LDS, die state d, with a clear die crack through NITED to the dentils near the adjacent S. From the Fred H. LOT 326 1803 S-249 R2 Corrected Numerator 100 over 000 F15+. Five points sharper but there is a rim bruise at the first S in STATES. Otherwise smooth and attractive with minor contact marks. LOT 327 1806 S-270 R1 VG10. Slightly sharper but there is an old, fine scratch from the neck to the end of the bust and another hidden in the hair to the left. Smooth glossy medium brown and chocolate. This cent has nice eye appeal in spite of the scratch; the reverse is choice. LDS with swelling at the date. From the Fred H. Borcherdt Collection

LOT 330 1816 N-1 R4 F12. Smooth glossy medium steel brown. Nicely struck and very attractive with minor marks. The only notable marks are a thin vertical nick off the chin and a tiny rim nick over the first T in STATES. LDS, die state e, with a strong die crack through NITE to the dentils near the adjacent S. The crack at NITE is quite bold. Graded F15 and CC#16 for the variety but finest of the die state in the Noyes census, his photo #35175. A very nice example of a rare die state, and it comes with a great provenance.

LOT 328 1811/10 S-286 R3 Overdate 11 over 10 VG10. Ten points sharper with very fine roughness in the fields and protected areas. No verdigris and the only mark is a dull scratch from the eye to star 5. Slightly glossy olive brown and chocolate. MDS. The overdate is obvious. From the Fred H. Borcherdt Collection
