SESSION TWO SELECTIONS FROM FRED BORCHERDT’S HALL OF FAME COLLECTION

LOT 314 1800/179 S-194 R3 Overdate 180 over 179, Style II Hair VG10. Mostly glossy olive brown and steel. Extremely fine granularity covers the fields but there is no verdigris, and the eye appeal is decent for the grade. The only mark is a very light rim bruise off the hair ribbon. MDS, Breen state VI. The die is failing at TY and to the right. The overdate feature is easily visible. From the Fred H. Borcherdt Collection

LOT 316 1800/179 S-196 R1 Overdate 180 over 179, Style II Hair VG10. Considerably sharper but moderately rough with a few light scratches hidden in the patina. No verdigris, and the toning is a decent and partly glossy chocolate brown and steel. MDS, Breen state II, with fine die clashmarks but no cracks. The overdate is clear. LOT 315 1800/179 S-195 R5 Overdate 180 over 179, Style II Hair VG10. Five points sharper but there is a rim dent at the B in LIBERTY and small nicks scattered over the obverse. Otherwise the planchet is smooth and the toning is an attractive and mostly glossy brown and chocolate with darker steel brown on the devices. E-MDS, Breen state II, with a dull die crack through the base of RTY into the field. The overdate is clear. Ex Superior 2/2005:1291 (as F12)-Fred H. Borcherdt Collection

 CONDITION CENSUS S-201 LATE STATE

LOT 317 1800 S-201 R4+ VG10+. Sharpness a bit better but there is a rim bruise off the chin and a pair of barely visible rim bruises behind the portrait. Smooth with glossy steel brown toning on the devices and darker olive brown and steel in protected areas. The reverse is quite nice for the grade. LDS, Breen state V late, with significant swelling in several places on the reverse. The die failure at the lower curls is strong.
