 SECOND FINEST NC-3 DIE STATE RARITY

LOT 309 1797 NC-3 R5+ Fair-2+. Slightly sharper but covered with fine to moderate granularity. No verdigris or marks. Medium steel brown. The details at the bottom of the obverse and top of the reverse are relatively strong because the dies were out of proper axial alignment (die faces not perfectly parallel). Extremely rare M-LDS, Breen state II, with a strong die crack through the top of TES to the rim, and the section outlined by the crack is just starting to rise as a retained cud. Only 3 examples with the crack are known to us. Graded net AG3 and tied for CC#2 honors behind the VG10 example in the ANS Collection in the Noyes census, his photo #26336.  From the Fred H. LOT 312 1800/179 S-192 R3 Overdate 180 over 179, Style II Hair VF20. Glossy chocolate and olive brown with a few puffs of reddish chocolate on the obverse. Would rate a slightly higher grade but there are faint scratches hidden in the toning in the field behind the head. MDS, Breen state III, with die cracks on the reverse. The overdate is bold. LOT 310 1800/798 S-191 R3 Overdate 800 0ver 798, Style I Hair F15+. Glossy medium chocolate brown and steel. Smooth and attractive with minor contact marks. The only notable defect is a small planchet void near the dentils before the chin. Otherwise it would rate a slightly higher grade. MDS, Breen state IV, with bulges and die clashmarks on the reverse. LOT 311 1800/798 S-191 R3 Overdate 800 0ver 798, Style I Hair VF20. Glossy chocolate and olive brown. Smooth with trivial marks including a tiny tick in the field off the lower end of the hair ribbon. M-LDS, Breen state VI, with more swelling on the reverse plus new die clashmarks inside the wreath. LOT 313 1800/179 S-193 R4 Overdate 180 over 179, Style II Hair VG10. Sharper by at least 5 points with areas of fine corrosion on the reverse, strongest in the lower right quadrant. Specks of greenish verdigris show in the rough areas. Otherwise the planchet is mostly smooth and the only significant mark is a rim bruise at the T in LIBERTY. MDS. The overdate is strong.
