TNA HOF Collection Pt 1
EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS
LOT 1304 1849 N-29 R2 MS60. Frosty light olive. The surfaces are satiny and the strike is sharp, but there are a couple nicks under star 7 plus traces of reddish planchet slag imbedded into the planchet on both sides. Several pieces of this variety are known that have traces of planchet slag, mostly at the dentil tips. The slag on this piece is located at the dentil tips near stars 6 & 7, UN, and RICA. A very curious phenomenon. EDS, die state a. The fine die lines from the neck are sharp and there is a very tiny but clearly defined rim cud under the 4. The fields are very slightly reflective. Tied for CC#8. Comes with a nice provenance.
LOT 1305 1849 N-29 R2 EF45. Five points sharper with light wear and great eye appeal, but there are a few small marks. A speck of corrosion on the nostril and a small but rather fresh scuff just right of this spot are the only notable marks, and they do not catch your eye. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate with mint frost in the fields and protected areas. M-LDS, die state d. The lines at the neck are faint and the line added at NI is gone. The narrow rim cuds at the bottom of the obverse are not present due to the obverse being slightly misaligned to the bottom.

THE BROWN-HOLMES N-30 RARITY
LOT 1306 1849 N-30 R5+ PCGS graded MS63 Brown. Lustrous light olive and steel brown. The fields are smooth and slightly reflective. This is a very sharply struck cent that has several carbon spots on both sides, the largest of these at the dentils over star 11 and under the tip of the wreath stem. The only signs of contact are a very light rim bruise right of star 9 and another over the I in AMERICA. EDS, die state a, without any crumbling inside the top of the N in ONE. Several examples of this variety were called proof strikes by Breen and Loring (Breen incorrectly called them early strikes of N-1), and NGC has even certified a few as proofs. In this cataloger’s opinion, all N-30 examples are business strikes and only the early strikes have reflective fields. But the sharpness and eye appeal of the early strikes are outstanding. Our grade is MS60 sharpness net AU55, CC#7 of this rare die variety in the Grellman census. The finest is a prooflike gem that resides in the ANS collection. Comes with a wonderful provenance. The attribution and Iskra Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. 405710.63/81174543 Ex Sidney W. Smith-Larry Whitlow (Beverly Hills Coin Shop)-R.
