Fred Borcherdt’s collection is called “The Hall of Fame Collection” for two reasons: first because he is in The Drag Racing Hall of Fame, and second because the coin collection he built is worthy of Large Cents Hall of Fame status. Fred set drag racing records and won national championships in a highly competitive sport. He earned a sponsorship from the Pontiac Motor Division during the “Muscle Car” era of the 60’s and 70’s because he found ways to improve the performance of their engines and drive trains beyond what the finest Pontiac engineers were able to achieve. As a result he was able to win championships racing Pontiac cars, and that brought added prestige to the Pontiac stable of high-performance vehicles. Because of his performance as a car builder and race driver he was enshrined into the Drag Racing Hall of Fame in 1972. Fred’s coin collection also qualifies for a Large Cents Hall of Fame (although none exists today, at least not officially) because he assembled a collection of superior quality and depth. The collection was built quietly and privately over many decades. Many if not most of his coins will be new to the marketplace. They came from private sources and have never been sold at auction, appeared in a dealer’s show case, or been offered on a fixed price list. Some are the finest known of the variety and others are extremely rare die states. But there is something for everyone with lower grade “backup” coins of most varieties in affordable grades. The extent of the collection is astounding. And the overall quality of the first line collection is breathtaking. You can’t look at everything in one day. We have tried—and failed miserably. Large Cents are the focus of his collection, but there is more. You will find superior examples of small cents, nickels, dimes, quarters, and half dollars. An ORIGINAL mint roll of 1909 VDB cents is included, all gem lustrous BU. The surprises just keep coming. So get ready for something special. Cataloging the entire collection will take some time. Your area of interest will become available soon. Please be patient. We are confident you will find coins that will fit your collecting objectives. So get ready for a real treat—even if all you do is look.
This first offering of “The Hall of Fame Collection” focuses on the cents of 1840-1849. Enjoy.

\ LOT 1003 1840 N-2 R2 Small Date, Small 18 over Large 18 MS62. Lustrous light steel brown and tan with subtle hints of light bluish steel overtone. Generous traces of mint red show on both sides and this cent has great eye appeal. The only notable marks are two very tiny specks of carbon at the upper right point of star 2 and a microscopic planchet chip at the left end of the eyebrow. EDS, die state a. The repunching on the 18 is sharp and there are no rim cuds. A really nice example of this “Redbook” variety. CC#8 in the Grellman census.

LOT 1007 1840 N-5 R1 Large Date, Repunched 0 AU55+. Lustrous medium brown and light chocolate with darker steel brown on the highpoints. Satiny with just a light touch of friction on the highest points of the devices. A tiny speck of darker toning just right of the main curl is the only notable mark. LDS, die state c. The repunching at the left top of the 0 is barely visible and there are several narrow rim cud breaks along the lower part of the obverse.
LOT 1004 1840 N-3 R1 Small Date AU58+. Glossy light to medium brown with frosty luster in the fields and protected areas. Smooth with just a couple tiny marks and a hint of rub on the highest points of the devices. A small nick close over the inner part of the hair bun is the best identifying mark. E-MDS, die state b. The obverse is cracked but the small lumps (hub defects) under the date are clear.

LOT 1008 1840 N-6 R1 Large Date, Repunched 40 MS60. Glossy light olive with generous traces of mellowed mint red showing on both sides, particularly on the reverse. The surfaces are lustrous and this cent has really nice eye appeal. A spot of darker brown toning over the tip of the wreath stem is the best identifying mark on this very attractive cent. Nearly qualifies as a “greenie.” E-MDS, die state b. The earlier arc lines over UNIT and ERIC are gone but the repunching on the 40 is clear, especially inside the right half of the 0. There are three tiny rim cuds at star 13.
LOT 1005 1840 N-4 R3- Small Date AU50. Glossy mix of light to medium brown and chocolate with frost in protected areas. Very light wear on the highpoints and just a few trivial marks including a small nick under the right point of star 4 and a tiny rim nick at star 11. MDS, die state b. The lumps (hub defects) under the date are strong and all the obverse rim cuds described in the Grellman reference are clear. Called an overdate 40 over 39 decades ago because of the hub defects, but there is no overdate. Struck with the reverse rotated 20 degrees CCW relative to the normal head-to-foot die orientation.

LOT 1009 1840 N-7 R3 Large Date EF45. Ten points sharper but there is a shallow planchet void in the field left of star 11, another smaller one on the cheek, and a third in the field off the chin (all as struck). Otherwise just a few light contact marks including a fine vertical scratch from the planchet void right of the main curl down to the right point of star 13. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate. Very rare EDS, die state a, with fine diagonal lines from the lower junction of the hair buns. The very fine diagonal lines from the dentils over ES in STATES are sharp. A nice cent in spite of the small planchet flaws.

Frost covers the protected areas. Light wear with a few minor marks including a small planchet flake under star 8 and a small vertical nick under star 5. MDS, die state b. LOT 1013 1840 N-10/11 R2 Large Date VF30. At least 5 points sharper but there is a planchet lamination flake under the 84 and some very light scratches inside the wreath. Traces of glue or wax can be found in protected areas on the reverse. Glossy medium chocolate brown with traces of frosty mint color on the reverse where glue protected the coin. E-MDS, die state b. The point of the curl over the date is blunt and the die lines over MERIC are gone. This is N-10.

LOT 1011 1840 N-8 R1 Large Date AU58. A sharp, attractive cent with no wear and great eye appeal, but it was cleaned and recolored long ago. Looks choice and the toning is really nice, quite deceptive. A speck of carbon on the end of a dentil left of star 1 and a small spot of darker toning (not carbon) over the E in CENT are the notable marks. LDS, die state d, with many rim cud breaks on the obverse.
LOT 1014 1840 N-10/11 R2 Large Date EF45+. Choice glossy light brown with slightly darker brown on the highpoints. Mint frost shows in protected areas. Essentially flawless with light wear on the devices and great eye appeal. A tiny tick on the rim over the first S in STATES is the best identifying mark. LDS, die state d. The point of the curl over the date is sharp and there are rim cuds at star 9 down nearly to star 10 (Newcomb’s old #11).

LOT 1015 1840 N-12/13 R2 Small Date EF40. At least five points sharper but there is a planchet lamination at the dentils and rim over MER (as struck). ROTATED REVERSE
LOT 1016 1840 N-12/13 R2 Small Date F15. Slightly sharper with a few too many light contact marks for the higher grade. Glossy light to medium brown. Minor marks including a speck of verdigris in the leaves under the second S in STATES. EDS, die state a. What makes this cent special is that the reverse is rotated 95 degrees clockwise. This is the first example of the variety seen by Grellman that has a clockwise rotation. All others of the variety seen with a rotated reverse were in the CCW direction from 80 to 170 degrees. The vast majority of the variety have a normally orientated reverse.

LOT 1018 1841 N-2 R2 MS60. Uniform glossy medium chocolate brown. Smooth and very attractive. No spots and only microscopic contact marks. This cent has superior eye appeal but the toning may not be original. M-LDS, die state b. The earlier lumps under the date (hub defects) are gone. The dies were freshly lapped (removing those hub defects) and the fields on both sides are smooth and slightly reflective. This cent has the eye appeal of a significantly higher grade.
LOT 1019 1841 N-3 R2 EF40+. Five points sharper with some small scratches and ticks between stars 3 & 4. Otherwise choice with smooth surfaces and attractive brown and chocolate toning that is delicately woodgrained. There are small contact marks scattered over the obverse, none distracting but too many to ignore on a mint state cent. A thin vertical nick under the left point of star 10 can help identify this cent. E-MDS, die state b early. The fields are lightly flowlined, and the die lines from the dentils over TE in STATES and ER in AMERICA are weak but still visible.
MOSTLY RED 1841 N-7
LOT 1025 1841 N-7 R2 PCGS graded MS63 Red & Brown, CAC Approved. Frosty mint red faded to steel brown on the highpoints with at least two thirds of the red showing, mostly on the reverse. No spots or stains, but this cent is covered with tiny contact marks, none distracting but far too many to ignore. Essentially this is a “baggy” mint state cent that looks like a mostly red gem to the unaided eye. The best identifying mark is a tiny spot of dark steel toning touching the wreath under the left edge of the E in CENT, and it is barely visible. Rare LDS, die state c late, with a clear die crack from the dentils below star 1 reaching almost to the throat. Called MS63 and tied for CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #30925. PROOFLIKE 1843 N-4
LOT 1045 1843 N-4/13 R1 Petite Head, Reverse of 1844 MS64+. Highly lustrous light bluish steel and olive with underlying mellowed mint color in protected areas on the reverse. A gorgeous cent, nearly flawless. The best identifying marks are a small area of slightly lighter toning on the neck near the curl, a barely visible tick on the end of the chin, and a small nick hidden on the right serif of the second T in STATES. LDS, die state d. The fields are covered with microscopic die polishing lines that removed the earlier die lines and accumulated flowlines, and the die polishing left the fields hard and slightly reflective. This is Newcomb’s #13. A superior example of this popular “Redbook” variety.

FINEST 1843 N-5 TYPE OF 1844
LOT 1046 1843 N-5 R1 Type of 1844 MS64+. Lustrous mint red mellowing to steel brown with about 45% of the planchet showing mint color. Satiny and virtually flawless. Sharply struck with full radial lines in all the stars and crisp dentils all the way around both sides. The only marks are some tiny ticks in the field right of the main curl, a nick on the edge under star 10, and a rim nick at the bottom of the reverse. Otherwise an unqualified gem cent. This is the finest example of the variety by a small margin in the Grellman census, marginally finer than the best example in the famous Naftzger collection.

LOT 1047 1843 N-6 R1 Type of 1844, Repunched 18 AU50. Sharpness very close to mint state but there are some small marks and stains. Frosty steel brown and light chocolate mixed with darker olive brown tones on both sides, darkest at ENT in CENT. The surfaces are satiny and the only notable marks are a light scuff on the bottom of the chin and a fine planchet lamination between stars 1 & 2. The lamination has been lightly abraded to minimize it’s appearance. MDS, die state c, with tiny rim cuds at stars 5 & 13. The repunching at the bottom of the 18 is dull but visible.

No spots and the only defects are some shallow low spots on the cheek and neck (as struck), and a light scuff on the edge over star 7. Otherwise choice. MDS, die state b. The earlier die line from the inner curl is gone but the repunching on the 184 remains clear, strongest under the 18. There are no rim cuds on the obverse. LOT 1049 1843 N-9 R2+ Petite Head, Repunched 843 MS63. Lustrous light steel brown with mellowed mint red covering 25% of the planchet. The only marks, and they are trivial, are a small planchet flake in the field before the mouth and a spot of darker brown toning (not carbon) nestled against the forelock. LDS, die state c. The earlier lump under the 1 is gone. There are several small but clear rim cud breaks on the obverse. The rim cud over UN is weak, barely visible, but the repunching on 843 is clear. LOT 1050 1843 N-9 R2+ Petite Head, Repunched 843 AU50. Glossy light brown with frost in the fields and protected areas. Attractive, just lightly worn on the devices. Several narrow rim cuds show on the obverse, clearest at stars 1-2.
LOT 1052 1843 N-11 R2- Petite Head EF45. Slightly sharper but there is a dull nick close over star 9. Otherwise quite nice with attractive glossy light brown toning and excellent eye appeal. E-MDS, die state b. The reverse is uncracked and there is a rectangular depression at the inner curl.

CC#7 in the Grellman census. Removed from a PCGS holder graded MS62 Brown (PCGS label #405855.62/16210050 included, and it shows the attribution).

THE DUPONT-TAD 1845 N-2 BREEN PROOF
LOT 1072 1845 N-2 R1 MS63. Beautiful steel brown and light olive with underlying lighter brown on the obverse. The fields are reflective and the only marks are faint hairlines on the obverse. EDS with the sharpest possible strike; it looks like a choice Proof. In fact Walter Breen called it a Proof on page 80 in his 1977 reference Walter Breen’s Encyclopedia of United States and Colonial Proof Coins 1722-1977. Other researchers have questioned his assessment but this cent does look at least as nice as many of the Proof-Only issues of 1840-1857 large cents. And it certainly is comparable to the 1846 N-21 PCGS graded PR64BN offered later in this sale. When I wrote the 2021 reference The Die Varieties of United States Large Cents 1840-1857 I had not yet examined the DuPont-TAD cent offered here. I referenced the Breen proof claim in a note at the bottom of the page and stated “the existence of a Proof strike of N-2 is highly doubtful.” Now I am not so sure. This cent does look like a Proof. You decide.
