EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 289 1837 N-16 R3 Plain Hair Cord VF30. Sharper but recolored glossy reddish chocolate brown. Smooth and attractive. A light rim bruise at the E in UNITED is the only notable mark. E-MDS.

Ex Rod Burress 4/22/1995

LOT 290 1837 N-17 R4 Plain Hair Cord VF20. Sharpness EF45 or better but harshly cleaned bright copper. Mostly smooth but there are areas of fine roughness on both sides. A cent that deserves to be properly retoned. A very interesting late die state example with a strong die crack through the dentils that outlines where a cud is forming at stars 6-7.5. This intermediate die state was unknown to Grellman when his die state monograph was prepared. The superior sharpness of this example has enabled a more accurate assessment of the progression of these cracks and cud breaks.

LOT 292 Group of Five 1838 Cents grading G5 to VG10. Average grade is VG7. Includes N-1 R1, N-6 R1, N-8 R1, N-10 R1, and N-11 R2. Some are sharper with minor defects but all have a clear date and legends. Lot of 5 coins.

LOT 291 1838 N-1 R1 EF45. Sharpness close to mint state but the reverse was recolored. The obverse is olive brown and chocolate; the reverse is chocolate with lighter brown on the right side. No marks. MDS with small rim cuds under the date and at star 1.

LOT 293 1838 N-2 R1 EF45. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate. Flowline luster shows in the protected areas and this cent has excellent eye appeal. No marks, just a light touch of wear on the highpoints. LDS, Grellman state c. The fields are flowlined and all traces of the inner circle on the obverse are gone.
