LOT 235 1831 N-12/4 R4 (as a die state) Large Letters G5. Glossy medium chocolate brown and steel. Smooth with minor marks including a couple light rim bruises on both sides. LDS, Grellman state i, with a large cud break connecting stars 12 & 13 to the rim. The lower left point on star 12 is not completely covered by the cud. There is a double profile from the forehead down to the neck. A very scarce and popular die state, one of the largest cud breaks in the entire series of US Large Cents.

LOT 236 1831 N-12/4 R4 (as a die state) Large Letters G5. A couple points sharper but there is a rim dent at star 5 and a few dull scratches in the field before the neck and chin. Smooth except for a trace of light corrosion between the lowest curl and star 13. Glossy olive brown and chocolate. Terminal die state, Grellman state j, with a large cud break at stars 12 & 13, and three points of star 12 are covered by the cud (the so-called “Harpooned Whale” die state).
