Ralph Rucker Collection Fixed Price Pt II

LOT 233

1798 S-173 R3 Small 8, Style II Hair F15 Sharpness VF20 or slightly better but there are too many light contact marks for the sharpness grade. These include some dull nicks and fine hairline scratches on the obverse and a rim bruise at ST in STATES. No roughness or verdigris. Attractive glossy chocolate and steel brown with subtle traces of lighter brown in protected areas. The date and legends are all bold. M-LDS, Breen state VII, with a die crack at LI outlining a cud that is forming from the tops of those letters to the rim above. In addition, a strong rim cud break at CA in AMERICA (Breen’s state IX) shows clearly on this example, thus proving Breen’s sequence of the later die states is incorrect (the rim cud at CA actually shows in State V early, not state IX). The reverse is rotated 50 degrees CCW from the normal head-to-foot die orientation. Struck slightly off center to K-4.5. A neat die state. Removed from an NGC slab graded VF35 (NGC label # 656461-006 included, and it shows the attribution and Reiver provenance). $1,250 Ex Dorothy I. Paschal-Ray Chatham 11/2/1977-Jules Reiver, Heritage Auctions 1/24/2006:19414-Daniel W. Holmes, Jr., McCawley & Grellman Auctions/ Goldbergs 9/6/2009:319
