LOT 368 1847 N-24 R1 ANACS graded VF30 . Glossy steel brown and light chocolate. Smooth and evenly worn with no meaningful marks. A tiny tick on the nose even with the bottom of the eye is the best identifying mark. EDS, die state a, with numerous die lines in the field around the date. Our grade is VF20 . Choice for the grade. The attribution is noted on the ANACS label. Certificate #7341052 From the Charles B. Wallace Collection LOT 369 1848 N-16 R2 Repunched 184 ANACS graded AU50 . Very attractive glossy light olive and brown. Flawless except for a few tiny but fresh scratches: one on the base of the second 8, two more on the rim below, and a few more on the rim over star 6. None of these marks catches your eye. E-MDS, die state b. Repunching on the 1 & first 8 is gone but the lump below the 4 is clear and there are no die clashmarks. Our grade is EF45 sharpness net VF35 . The attribution is noted on the ANACS label. Certificate #7341054 From the Charles B. Wallace Collection (includes the Wallace collection envelope) LOT 370 1848 N-17 R1 Repunched 4 PCGS graded MS64 Brown . Frosty medium brown and light olive with traces of very faded mint red remaining visible on the reverse. Satiny and attractive. The only notable mark is a tiny tick on the eye brow. Sharply struck E-MDS, Grellman die state b. The repunching on the 4 is clearly visible. Our grade is MS60+ . Certificate #1883.64/15233224 LOT 371 1848 N-44 R5+ VF20 . Sharpness at least 5 points better but there are some contact marks including a nick high on the neck and a minor rim bruise at NI in UNITED. There are traces of verdigris in the dentils at NITED but the surfaces are smooth. Frosty medium brown blending to light chocolate in protected areas. Peeps of mellowed mint red show in some protected areas on the reverse and the eye appeal of this cent is quite nice for the grade. EDS, die state a. The die lines at UN are clear. Tied for CC#7 honors for the variety in the Grellman census. FINEST 1848 N-46 RARITY
LOT 372 1848 N-46 R7 VF20+ . Attractive glossy medium brown and light chocolate. The surfaces are smooth and this cent would rate a grade of at least VF30 if not for a pair of mint-made planchet flaws at the rim and dentils over stars 5 & 6. Otherwise just minor marks including a small but fresh scuff on the lower part of the upright of the E in ONE. EDS. All the attribution points are clear and the fine diagonal die lines from the dentils under the date are sharp. This variety was unknown to Newcomb and Reiver. Thomas R. Wagemaker discovered the first example in 1991, had the discovery confirmed by Grellman in August of that year, and since then 6 more have been found (counting this piece). The discovery coin had been the finest of that small group at net F12, but this new discovery is clearly CC#1. The obverse for the N-46 die variety was used first on N-46 and subsequently to strike the N-44, N-32, and N-6 varieties in that order. The reverse for N-46 was first used to strike N-10, then N-46, and finally N-11 where it suffered three rim cud breaks and was retired. The current condition census for N-46 according to Grellman is 20+, 12, 8, 7(3), 6. All 7 of these examples are net graded due to marks, corrosion, damage, or planchet defects. An unexpected opportunity for the collector of late date large cents.
